Fabio Capello believes that the race for the Champions League places in Serie A could go right down to the wire, with AC Milan among the teams involved.

Sergio Conceicao was officially named as the head coach on December 30 and he was given a clear number one mission: to get into the UCL places, be that top four or top five. So far the Rossoneri have played seven Serie A matches under him, picking up 14 points.

An average of two points per game is positive and had it been maintained since the beginning of the season then qualification for the next Champions League would likely be easy. Instead, they must now accelerate if anything and show consistency.

Interviewed in today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Capello gave his thoughts on the action over the weekend and also the battle for the top four spots in Serie A, with his comments relayed by MilanPress.

“I really like Lazio, they are a very united group and play well. In addition, if Milan win their game in hand in Bologna, they would be only two points behind, as would vice versa if the rossoblù were to win. Without forgetting Fiorentina, who are always there. In short, the race is still very long to say who is the favourite or not.”
