Burnley should look to take advantage of Tottenham Hotspur left-back Ryan Sessegnon's contract situation this summer, with Vincent Kompany's pull likely to make the path to an agreement smoother.

Sessegnon was signed by Spurs from Fulham in 2019 for a baseline fee of £25million, but he has failed to have the desired impact at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He signed a five-year deal upon making the switch, which is set to expire this summer, making the 24-year-old a free agent.

A move to a club like Burnley might be what's needed to reignite the career of the left-sided player, and he would fill a gap in the Clarets' squad.

Sessegnon has some top-level interest

Despite experiencing a tough time at Tottenham in his battle for first-team minutes, journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that the player is subject to interest across England and Europe, with a preference for remaining in the Premier League.

The battle for his signature will have already commenced behind the scenes, with Spurs informing the London-born player that he will be free to speak to other clubs this summer.

That news comes even though the Lilywhites hold the option of a one-year extension clause in his deal, an option which they have revealed they won't be taking.

Kompany could use pull to address squad issue

Although Sessegnon has made clear his intention to remain in the top flight with his next move, the pull of being managed by Kompany, widely regarded to be one of the hottest prospects in the managerial market and currently being pursued by European heavyweights Bayern Munich, may hold sway.

Providing Kompany remains at Turf Moor, the Clarets will be one of the favourites to bounce back up into the Premier League, so Sessegnon's wish for Premier League football may be delivered in the near future in any case.

It would be a signing that would make equal sense for Burnley, as they have struggled to replace Ian Maatsen at left-back since the loanee departed and moved on to another temporary deal at Borussia Dortmund.

Sessegnon would be a low-cost option to resolve that issue, a welcome fact on account of the vast spending by Burnley last summer in a botched attempt to stay in the Premier League.

It could be the move to reignite Sessegnon's career

That Sessegnon wants to remain in the top flight is clear, but a move to a team like Burnley could be an ideal level to kickstart his career.

Their promotion to the Premier League next season is a realistic objective, but there is also a clear route to regular first-team football at Turf Moor and a chance for the left-back to build up some game time.

In the five years he has spent at Spurs, he's made just 57 appearances. That rate is not sufficient for any player to properly develop.

His promise is clear, and at Burnley he would likely be given the minutes to build his way back up to Premier League football, bringing the club with him at the same time and likely endearing himself to fans. Switching to another top-tier team could leave him in a similar situation to the one he found himself in at Spurs.

The move may not be the most attractive to Sessegnon at first glance, but should an offer come in, he should give it some serious consideration, and Kompany should use any sway he may hold. It would address a key area for Burnley, and may be just what is needed to reignite Sessegnon's young career.
