Burnley look set to make their first move in the January window
Burnley are closing in on their first signing of the January transfer window, with the club believed to be in advanced talks to sign Silkeborg's Oliver Sonne.
That's according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that Burnley are close to ending their ongoing pursuit of the Peruvian right back by agreeing a fee good enough to bring him to Turf Moor.
It's no secret that Burnley hope to be active in the January window as they seek to bolster their squad ahead of the promotion run in, but it was widely expected attackers would be at the forefront of their recruitment plan.
Scott Parker's side sit third in the Championship, but their defence has earned them most of their plaudits this season, with their attack leaving a lot to be desired, but the former Bournemouth and Fulham boss has made an early move to bolster his back line.
Football Insider claim both the Clarets and Coventry City had bids turned down for Sonne in the summer, but it's Burnley who seem to have returned with avengeance to get a deal done swiftly.
Although the formalities of the deal are yet to be finalised, and naturally, he can't sign until the January transfer window opens, the report claims that Burnley are close to agreeing a deal in the region of £2.5m for the Peruvian right back.
Sonne has proved versatility for his club side Silkeborg by playing on both sides of defence, while he's also stepped into midfield, and that ability to play in numerous positions could prove invaluable in the run in.
Silkeborg's loss is Burnley's gain, and the Sporting Director of the Danish club has recently stated that Sonne "has probably played his last game", although he also admitted that "there are still some formalities and things that need to be said (about the sale)."
Identifying a successor for Connor Roberts, who is out of contract at the end of the season was always likely to be an issue for Burnley, but most assumed it would be one they tackled in the summer.
Burnley fans will feel refreshed to see the club tackling the issue proactively, and to sign an international standard full back to either push him out of the team now, or succeed him in the summer will fill them with confidence.
It also begs the question whether they'll look to do something similar with fellow soon-to-be out of contract stars Josh Brownhill and Jay Rodriguez, but for now, a successor for Roberts, should he choose not to sign a new deal, is a great start.
