Wout Weghorst has been linked with a move back to the Netherlands this summer

Highlights FC Twente’s manager is keen on bringing Burnley striker Wout Weghorst to the club to strengthen the attack. Weghorst scored a vital goal for the Dutch national team at Euro 2024 and is a target for Twente despite Ajax's interest. After successful time on loan at Hoffenheim, Weghorst's future with Burnley remains uncertain, possibly leading to a move.

FC Twente’s manager, Joseph Oosting, has discussed the club’s interest in signing Burnley striker Wout Weghorst.

The forward’s future is the subject of transfer speculation this summer following his return from a loan spell at Hoffenheim.

Weghorst is currently with the Dutch national team, competing at Euro 2024 in Germany.

The 31-year-old bagged the match-winning goal in the team’s opening fixture against Poland last weekend.

Twente have been linked with a move for the Burnley player, but they face competition from Eredivisie rivals Ajax in the race to his signature.

Oosting has made it clear that the club is interested in signing Weghorst this summer, as they look to bolster their attacking options.

He is also relaxed about the situation surrounding the forward’s future at Turf Moor despite facing competition from Ajax.

"[Myron] Boadu and Weghorst are players who would like to play at Twente," Oosting said.

"It's as simple as that.

"Then it's about whether we can get them.

"I have read it too.

"I cannot comment on all the speculations.

"I think there is another interest behind bringing this. I know how that works.

"We are not crazy.

"I have no other news than I have had before.

"I am quite relaxed about that.

"I had some texts with him this morning [Wednesday].

"We ask how things are with each other, but not yet whether we will see each other in a few weeks."

Weghorst’s contract with Burnley runs until the summer of 2025, meaning this transfer window could be the club’s last chance to cash in on him at a reasonable price.

The striker joined the Clarets in the 2022 January market, but has not played for the team in two years.

He spent last season at Hoffenheim, having previously been on loan with Besiktas and Manchester United.

Wout Weghorst’s Hoffenheim loan

Weghorst’s loan move to Hoffenheim proved quite successful for the player, as he played an important role in the team finishing seventh in the table.

The veteran striker contributed seven goals and three assists from 28 appearances in the Bundesliga, with the team earning European qualification for next season as a result (all stats from Fbref).

It remains unclear what the next step will be for Weghorst, whose future may not be decided until after the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 campaign.

Ronald Koeman’s side will be competing in the group phase until 25 June, but their participation could run into July depending on their progress.

Weghorst sale is inevitable

Weghorst’s future surely lies away from Burnley given he hasn’t even played for the club in two years.

His contract situation means another loan move must be off the table, as the Lancashire outfit needs to cash in on him.

Risking losing him for nothing next year would be pointless unless the new manager insists that he must be part of the first team squad, which seems unlikely.

A move back to the Netherlands could be a good fit, as it would take him back home, and FC Twente are a club with a high pedigree domestically.
