Manchester United have made an improved bid to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, according to Tier 1 reporter David Ornstein.
This will be the third bid United have made for the Cameroonian, having had one of £45 million plus £10 million and one for £55 million plus £7.5m rejected by the Bees.
Ornstein writes in The Athletic that the “latest proposal is worth £65 million plus £5m and is awaiting a response from the London club.”
This represents a significant increase.
It had been said that Brentford wanted United to match or improve on their £62.5m offer for Matheus Cunha but when INEOS did this, they refused it and asked for a figure closer to £70 million.
This demand has now essentially been met by United, who will expect the offer to be accepted, particularly as the player is entering the last year of his contract at the Gtech Stadium.
If Brentford accept United’s offer, the deal could move quickly, with Mbeumo already having agreed personal terms with the Old Trafford outfit.
He will probably not sign in time for the Red Devils’ first pre-season tour match against Leeds United on Saturday but could make the plane for the pre-season of the United States which starts on Sunday week.
Whether United will then press ahead to try to sign a striker is unknown at this stage. By adding Mbeumo and Cunha, both capable of leading the line and both prolific in the Premier Meague last season, INEOS might decide that their priorities lie elsewhere.
If the offer is refused, United may decide to cut their losses and look for an alternative target.
Mbeumo has been committed to the deal from an early stage. His old manager at Brentford, Thomas Frank, reportedly made a bid for him to join his new club, Spurs, but was informed by the 25 year old that his wish was to come to Old Trafford.
