Yoane Wissa Frustrated as Brentford Reject Newcastle Approach

Yoane Wissa finds himself at the centre of a transfer standoff, with Brentford digging in and Newcastle United remaining interested. As Sky Sports reported, “Brentford striker Yoane Wissa is hoping Newcastle have not given up on signing him,” following a rejected offer of “around £25m.” The 28-year-old forward is now understood to be refusing to train or play for the West London side.

Brentford’s Stance Hardens Amid Turmoil

Brentford are in no rush to sell. With Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Norgaard, and head coach Thomas Frank all departing this summer, the club is reluctant to lose yet another key figure. As Sky Sports stated, “Brentford insist Wissa is not for sale,” despite the growing pressure from both the player and suitors.

Wissa, who has one year left on his contract with an option for a further year, feels this window is a crucial moment in his career. The chance to join a Champions League-chasing club like Newcastle may not come again. “He wants to join Newcastle and feels, at this stage of his career, he will not get another chance to play Champions League football.”

Dispute Over Assurances Adds Fuel

Central to Wissa’s frustration is a belief that he had been promised a move this summer. “The 28-year-old is understood to be furious and believes he was given assurances he would be allowed to leave this summer after Ivan Toney’s departure last summer.” However, this has been disputed, with a club source telling Sky Sports News that “he was not given any such assurances.”

This conflict has seen Wissa leave the club’s pre-season training camp in Portugal. Brentford’s new head coach Keith Andrews remains diplomatic, suggesting a return to training is expected: “He has gone back to London. It was his decision, obviously because of speculation,” Andrews told the club’s media. “There are clubs interested and he felt it was the right thing to go back to London. It’s simple, really. He folds back into the group next week when we come back to training.”

Newcastle Interest Remains Active

While Newcastle United are monitoring other forward options, their interest in Wissa is far from over. Sky Sports reported that “Newcastle still want to do a deal but are looking at other options.” Whether they return with an improved offer remains to be seen, but Wissa clearly sees St James’ Park as his ideal next step.

Nottingham Forest, who had bids turned down for Wissa in January and again this summer, are also in the frame. However, the player’s sights appear firmly set on Newcastle.

Player Versatility and Value

Wissa’s appeal is clear. With the ability to play across the front line, his pace, aggression and Premier League experience offer clear value to top-tier clubs. For Brentford, though, losing him amid so many other exits could disrupt stability at the wrong time. For now, the player remains in limbo, and the club holds the cards.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For Brentford, there is a sense of unease. Yoane Wissa has been a loyal figure and a consistent performer, but this summer has felt different. Losing Mbeumo and Norgaard was hard enough, and seeing Wissa push for a move adds to the instability. Fans will understand his ambition to play in the Champions League, especially at 28, but the manner of the stand-off is unsettling. The idea of a player refusing to train goes against the values that have defined Brentford’s rise.

For Newcastle fans, the move is appealing but not essential. Wissa would bring added pace and depth in wide areas, yet he may not walk into the starting XI. If the price goes up, supporters may question whether the money is better spent on a younger long-term prospect. Still, if a deal can be struck closer to £25m, it represents good business and a player hungry to prove himself on the biggest stage.

Ultimately, both clubs face a decision. Brentford must weigh short-term squad unity against long-term value, and Newcastle must decide how far to stretch for a player who wants to wear black and white. The window still has time, but tensions are rising.
