Brendan Rodgers has revealed his assessment of Maik Nawrocki’s display at Pittodrie as the Champions run out emphatic 5-1 winners over Aberdeen…

Making just his third appearance of the campaign, the centre-back opened his scoring account for Celtic with an excellent header to put the Hoops ahead against Aberdeen.

Nawrocki displayed confidence at the back

Nawrocki displayed confidence at the back, up against Kevin Nisbet and showed composure when distributing the ball from defence alongside Auston Trusty and Viljami Sinisalo behind him.

Despite limited game time this season, Rodgers was pleased with Nawrocki’s showing in the Granite City: “I thought he played through the lines really, really well, defended well, and obviously, he was very dangerous in the box,” said the Celtic boss.

‘Great header for his first goal’

“[It was a] great header for his first goal. So, yes, I was pleased with the two centre-halves. It was awkward for Auston in the first half, because he was blinded a wee bit with the sun on that side. But I thought those two were strong. Defended well, goalkeeper was assured, two full-backs, excellent. It was very pleasing.”

Celtic will conclude their Scottish Premiership season this weekend as St Mirren visit the Glasgow’s east end, with Rodgers’ side set to receive the league trophy after the final whistle.

After making eight midweek changes at Pittodrie and still securing a convincing victory, Rodgers may now have some selection dilemmas to consider before the Scottish Cup final next Saturday.

However, the Celtic manager dismissed any speculation around selection headaches: “The three games that we would play [Hibs, Aberdeen and St Mirren], I said I was going to change the team,” explained Rodgers. “We did that tonight and it was to get the guys into the best possible place for the cup final.”

“[There were] so many good performances this evening, individually. So the guys got minutes in their legs, some of the guys that haven’t been playing for a little while. But not just minutes, they’ve got a real good performance in their legs as well. It just sets us up really nice for the weekend and then we can prepare for the final.”
