NJ/NY Gotham FC and the rest of the NWSL might be on the international break until the weekend, but the Bats are probably still on a high after their CONCACAF W Champions Cup championship win. They beat Tigres UANL Femenil to lift the trophy, which was the competition's and their first. Unquestionably, this was a highlight of the year, especially since they have had a roller coaster year in the NWSL.
After ten matches, Gotham FC is 3-4-3 and sits in ninth place, right outside the playoff line. Hence, many are hoping that the Champions Cup win will boost the ladies' confidence and lead the team to better days in league play.
The good news is that Gotham has two of three matches at home in June. As always, it will not be easy. So, let's take a look at the upcoming month's schedule.
Gotham FC will resume NWSL play with a home game against the Kansas City Current. This will be the most challenging fixture of the month, for the Current sits in first place and is the best team in the league at this time. Notably, the teams shared the points in both games last season, but the home side's roster was drastically different. It is difficult to predict what will happen with this battle, but it also depends on which Gotham team shows up.
Will it be the side that struggles to score and allows multiple goals like they did against Portland Thorns FC? Will it be like the 1-0 loss to San Diego Wave FC? Or will they remind everyone that they can beat top sides, just as they did against a team that outplayed them last year, the Washington Spirit?
The lone road game of June will see Gotham head out west to take on Utah Royals FC. The 13th-place team is struggling again this year and has only one win. However, Chicago Stars FC was also at the bottom of the table, and the Bats shared the points with them. Therefore, it is vital that the visitors enter Utah and believe they are facing a top team. On paper, this should end with a road win for the Bats. They also know how to win in style, for they beat them 4-1 away from home in 2024.
Gotham FC will end the month at home against Bay FC. If they drop any points in the other games, then this will be a must-win. At the same time, on paper, they should beat Bay at home. The Bats will want all three points, for they will not want to enter the long break without a win. The NWSL will pause for the mandated break, and then they will be off in July, so players with international tournaments will not miss games. Teams are supposed to play matches during this time, but nothing has been announced. Nevertheless, Gotham does not want to be in a bad spot with over a month between NWSL matches.
