Inter Milan faced Monterrey in their first match of the Club World Cup group stage.

The Nerazzurri dominated possession, and created a number of good chances against the Mexican side. However, they were far from clinical with the dangerous situations they had.

On the other hand, Monterrey were able to fashion a number of decent chances. Particularly on the counterattack and from set pieces.

Therefore, Inter kicked off their Club World Cup campaign by settling for a point. Sergio Ramos opened the scoring for Monterrey, before Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez responded with the equalizer.

Both of those goals came before halftime. Then, in the second half neither of the two teams was able to get on the scoresheet again.

This match was also the beginning of a new era for Inter. It was the first with Cristian Chivu as coach after the departure of Simone Inzaghi.

After the match, Inter wingback Carlos Augusto commented that “South American teams are tough to play against.”

“They fight for every ball,” he added.

The Brazilian admitted that “we started badly.”

“Then we found the right balance. We had to take advantage of our chances and win, but we have two more matches now. We’ll see what happens.”

Then, Augusto noted that it’s “a different kind of pitch” for Inter.

“And it was too hot as well. But I don’t want to make excuses. It was the same for both teams.”

“Clearly, on a pitch like this, football is less beautiful for everyone,” Augusto then added. “But we have to do better.”

Carlos Augusto also gave his thoughts on the transition to Cristian Chivu’s tactical system. “I feel good,” he said of the switch.

“The new coaching staff have brought in some new things for us to learn,” continued the Brazilian.

“I’ve only trained with them for three days. But I feel good with the group and the staff.”

Augusto admitted that it “takes time” to make make the adjustment. “But we know our strengths, and we have to keep going on this path.”
