According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Borussia Dortmund and Niko Kovač must be prepared to fight for a place in Europe without three of their promising young stars. Ayman Azhil, Marcel Lotka, and Cole Campbell are all expected to be out of training until after the International Break.
Ayman Azhil has suffered a thigh injury and will miss about four weeks of training. The Moroccan winger has made 45 appearances for Borussia Dortmund’s youth squad, scoring eight times since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2023. Just this season, Azhil has three goals and an assist to his name. He’s found his way onto the senior squad bench this season with some frequency, making a pair of substitute appearances last fall in wins over RB Leipzig and Sturm Graz.
At the same time, Marcel Lotka has picked up a shoulder injury that seems less than straightforward. Lotka is a promising German keeper and third in Dortmund’s senior squad hierarchy, behind Gregor Kobel and Alexander Meyer. However, Lotka has been a consistent first choice for the youth squad, playing 20 matches this season and earning five clean sheets.
The final injury is to American prospect Cole Campbell. While little information is known about his fresh injury, Ruhr Nachrichten confirms Campbell will be sidelined until after the International break. Campbell is an attacking-minded player who has scored twice in eleven appearances for the youth squad while finding himself frequently on the bench of BVB’s senior squad. Most notably, Campbell made six appearances this season for the senior squad, mostly coming during BVB’s autumnal injury crisis.
