Tyrhys Dolan's future is uncertain following his exit from Blackburn Rovers this summer
Samsunspor President Yüksel Yıldırım has confirmed that the club have pulled out of the race to sign Tyrhys Dolan this summer due to his wage demands, in what could be a boost for Bristol City.
It was reported by Alan Nixon this past weekend that the Robins are attempting to sign the winger following his exit from Blackburn Rovers, although they would need to pay compensation either via an agreed fee with Valerien Ismael's side or through a tribunal for the 23-year-old.
However, they face competition from clubs in Greece and Turkey, with Samsunspor emerging as one of those interested sides.
Dolan made 44 appearances in the Championship last season, contributing seven goals and six assists, as the team finished seventh in the table.
Yıldırım has confirmed that Samsunspor had an interest in signing Dolan following his exit from Ewood Park.
However, he cited the winger’s desire to compete in the Premier League, as well as his wage demands, as reasons why a deal won’t be finalised this summer.
"We were interested in Tyrhys Dolan, but he aims to play in the English Premier League,” said Yıldırım, via Samsun Haber.
“He is also a player who is financially above our budget.
“At the moment, we don't have a budget to cover salaries over 1 million euros (£860,000)."
Dolan has spent the last five years at Ewood Park, signing for Rovers after being dropped by Lancashire rivals Preston North End, but has left the club after not signing the new deal offered to him to extend his contract beyond this summer.
Dolan has made 191 appearances in the Championship across five seasons at Blackburn, and has grown in importance over that time.
He played the most minutes of his career in a single league season last year, starting in 40 of his 44 appearances, and it was also his most prolific campaign, scoring seven times, with Blackburn missing out on the play-offs by just two points.
But now the door is open for Bristol City to sign him due to Samsunspor pulling out of talks for the player due to his £16,500 per week wage demands - the Robins will likely be able to afford that, should they want to push the boat out and land a transfer coup.
Dolan staying in English football is his best route to competing in the Premier League at this stage, and after finishing sixth in the Championship last season and under new leadership now with Gerhard Struber, Bristol City are heading in a positive direction, and should be an enticing project for someone like the departing Blackburn Rovers attacker.
If the Robins can match the alleged wage demands of Dolan then this is a deal that could prove very smart for both parties - they of course though would have to pay compensation for his services, so it wouldn't be an entirely freebie of a deal.
