The Blues' new ground will be the centrepiece of the impressive sports quarter built in Birmingham

Birmingham City fans are living the dream currently. Right now, they are one of the most ambitious clubs in England, and if everything goes the way of Tom Wagner and co, it won't be long until they are dining with the big boys in the Premier League.

They aren't just looking to do so on the pitch either, as they plan to build a new stadium with a capacity of 62,000 at the heart of their new sports quarter, less than a mile away from St Andrews' Stadium.

The capacity would place them among the top four in the Premier League, with only West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United being able to house more than 62,000 currently.

For many Blues fans, planning permission and new designs can't come quickly enough, and there'll be some who hope that their stature by the time the ground opens will warrant a ground that large, too.

The ambition of Birmingham on the pitch is clearly matched off of it. Tom Wagner stated this past June that their goal is to complete back-to-back promotions and become a Premier League side this time next season, and the building of a new 62,000 stadium is set to start and end at a similar pace.

Speaking to the BBC, Richard Parker, the Mayor of the West Midlands, said that Birmingham's owners were aiming to secure planning permission and get set to build on the ground by the 2028/29 season.

Wagner himself then added that he expects the club to be using the stadium in the 2030/31 campaign, a mere five years from now.

Alongside the stadium, the site, which will be upwards of 125 acres, will include a smaller stadium, an indoor arena and a training complex. The stadium itself is the focus, of course, but with Wagner's ambition and investment, you'd expect that the completion of the entire quarter would follow soon after.

Birmingham City will have ambitions to be a European-level club by 2030

Whilst not completely outlined by Tom Wagner or anyone on the Birmingham board, you'd infer that, given the goal this season is a second successive promotion, the Blues won't want to waste time in becoming one of the top teams in the Premier League, either.

So, if Chris Davies can deliver another promotion this term, and all goes to plan regarding the opening of the new 62,000-capacity ground, Birmingham will have four seasons at the top level before they move homes.

To have one of the biggest grounds in the country, there's an expectation that Birmingham will be one of the biggest clubs in the country at that time, as they attempt to consistently sell out a big stadium.

Given the pull that this project has garnered for players in League One and the Championship so far, there might not be an issue in becoming well-established in the Premier League in the first couple of seasons back in the top flight, if promotion is achieved this time round.
