Birmingham City are set to sign Wales international attacker Lewis Koumas on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool.
In a competitive battle for his signature, alongside both Sheffield United and Wrexham, it now appears as though Birmingham City have won the race to sign Liverpool youngster Lewis Koumas on a season-long loan deal.
It has been rumoured for a while that Koumas will move to the Championship again this season, with Birmingham and Sheffield United in for the attacking midfielder, and Wrexham coming in late to try and pinch the move.
Koumas, the son of former West Bromwich Albion man Jason, has already been capped six times by Wales and has made one first-team appearance for Liverpool, in a game in which he scored against Southampton in a 3-0 victory in the fifth round of the 2023/24 FA Cup.
Koumas spent last season out on loan at a Stoke City side that struggled throughout the campaign, but he individually showed signs of real promise as he went on to make 43 appearances for the Potters.
Now, after that first loan stint at the Bet365 Stadium, it appears as though he is returning to the Championship, with big spending Birmingham set to bring him in.
According to Fabrizio Romano, via his X account, the 19-year-old Wales international has opted to move to St Andrew’s and an agreement has now been reached, with Koumas now set for a medical in the second city.
Koumas will become Birmingham’s 12th signing of the summer as Chris Davies’ League One record-breakers from last season seek to mount a serious promotion challenge in the Championship this season.
Able to play out-wide on either flank, Koumas’ predominant position has been out-wide on the left, where he will now compete for a spot in the team alongside Keshi Anderson.
Following the arrivals of Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Alfons Sampsted, who made their loan deals permanent moves, Birmingham have brought in Phil Neumann, Demarai Gray, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Kyogo Furuhashi, Kanya Fujimoto and Marvin Ducksch on permanent deals.
Koumas will join a loan contingent that currently consists of Brighton and Hove Albion duo James Beadle and Eiran Cashin, as well as Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Tommy Doyle.
Having set the new all-time EFL points tally of 111 on their way to winning the League One title last season, Koumas will be arriving at a Birmingham side seeking to earn back-to-back promotions and return to the top-flight for the first time in over a decade and a half.
The Blues started their campaign with an impressive performance in a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town at St Andrew’s in a game in which they were much the better side before conceding a controversial equalising George Hirst penalty in second-half stoppage-time.
Having then defeated Sheffield United by two goals to one in the first round of the EFL Cup, Birmingham then produced a dramatic late turnaround to edge past Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park by the same scoreline.
The one concern over Chris Davies’ possession-dominant football would be a potential lack of ingenuity and individual inspiration in the final third, leading to the occasional blunt performance, but the addition of Koumas to the City squad will be designed to guard against that, offering an alternative creative spark.
