Could the former Crystal Palace stakeholder be closing in on relieving Dejphon Chansiri of his stranglehold on the Owls?

A potential takeover of Sheffield Wednesday could be set to take a new positive twist, with former Crystal Palace stakeholder John Textor registering his interest once more in taking the South Yorkshire club from Dejphon Chansiri.

The Owls are still in a state of limbo and crisis, with another payday for players looming this week - albeit the wage bill is considerably less than it once was thanks to players being sold for cut-price fees or having their contracts ripped up due to multiple occasions of unpaid salaries.

Precious little Wednesday fans turned out for their surprise EFL Cup success over Leeds United on Tuesday evening in a sign of protest against Chansiri and his seeming inability to let go of the club, and with potential takeover leads drying up in recent weeks, Textor looks to be emerging from the shadows as a potential saviour once more.

Textor recently sold his 44.9 per cent stake in Palace to New York Jets co-owner Woody Johnson for around £190 million, on the back of the Eagles being demoted from the UEFA Europa League and into the UEFA Conference League thanks to the American businessmen's interests in French side Lyon - meaning they fell foul of multi-club ownership rules.

It was then reported a few weeks ago by journalist Matt Hughes that Textor was teaming up with football financier Keith Harris to try and broker a deal to buy Sheffield Wednesday - a man who has set up deals to see West Ham, Manchester City and Aston Villa all taken over in the past.

However, in a fresh update from Ed Aarons of The Guardian, it is claimed that Harris is no longer in Textor's plans when it comes to who is part of the group to potentially take Wednesday over with his help and funding, and it may be a case that the 59-year-old could go alone in his pursuit.

And it has been reported by Aarons that Textor wants a meeting with Chansiri next week for takeover talks after flying into the United Kingdom, and in recent days he has "sounded out" the representatives of the maligned Thai businessman to try and make the in-face discussions happen.

It's somewhat admirable how Sheffield Wednesday appear to be fighting against the odds right now on the pitch, having come from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Wrexham this past weekend in Championship action in spite of their threadbare squad, and with an incredibly young starting line-up, they squeezed past Leeds in the EFL Cup on penalties.

The spirit of Henrik Pedersen's squad cannot be denied, but it's clear to see that the Dane needs serious help and reinforcements on the pitch - yet he cannot get that until the EFL are satisfied that Chansiri has the funds to pay Sheffield Wednesday's squad - and another D-day is approaching this week in regards to that.

Chansiri's £100 million valuation of the club is clearly a problem, but as a businessman with his interest in several clubs, John Textor could be the man to try and drive that price down, whilst also bringing some fresh, proven funding to Hillsborough, with the squad, stadium and playing facilities all needing investment.

With it now looking likely that a takeover will be further down the line past Monday's transfer deadline, any new players that will arrive at the Owls before January - if the ownership changes hands - will have to be free agents, but if Textor can strike a deal in the coming weeks to bring a change in the board room, then that will matter not to Pedersen and the fans, who just need a different figure to guide the club away from their troubles.
