Celtic’s origins are intrinsically linked to the nineteenth century catastrophe The Great Famine, which saw waves of Irish immigrants arrive in Scotland seeking a new beginning – ultimately leading to the club’s founding in 1887. Almost 140 years on, Celtic continues to thrive, with its foundation in charity still deeply remembered.

This weekend, as Trophy Day coincides with National Famine Commemoration Day, Celtic will honour their Irish heritage by incorporating the Celtic Cross into their iconic green and white kit for their encounter against St Mirren. The club also announced that several of these special shirts will be auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting charities in Ireland.

A statement confirming this initiative by Celtic, read: “Celtic Football Club is delighted to confirm that a selection of matchworn and match issue shirts from the game against St. Mirren – signed by each respective player from the matchday squad – will be available to bid on via our charity eBay account.”

“Bidding will go live at 5pm on Tuesday, May 20 and will close around 5pm on Tuesday, 27 May. Keep an eye out for further details on how to bid.”

“Proceeds raised from the shirt auction will be devoted to supporting vulnerable children and young people through our project delivery in Ireland. Thank you for your wonderful support.”

Saturday promises to be another celebratory occasion at Celtic Park, as the team prepares to raise their fourth Scottish Premiership title in a row after facing St Mirren. Brendan Rodgers and James Forrest will take part in the trophy presentations before and after the match, marking the club’s second major honour of the season.

Celtic will have the opportunity to complete a domestic treble next Saturday when they take on Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park.
