The Daily Mirror has taken up the reporting on Chelsea interest in Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

They say that the Ireland international “could be one of the best bargain buys this summer”, when he’s expected to leave the Reds where he’s been a regular backup for several years, racking up 64 senior appearances through various injuries to number one Alisson.

They reckon Liverpool value him at between £30m and £40m as he will enter the last year of his contract come the summer. That does indeed make him good value for a player who has always looked like a solid option when given the chance.

It’s even speculated that Arne Slots’ team “may have to reduce their asking price to £20m” if there are no takers early in the window.

Smokescreen or real commitment? What to make of Chelsea briefs

Despite all this, the briefs which come out of Chelsea continually insist that the club aren’t looking to add another goalkeeper this summer. Having bought Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic and Mike Penders all in the last couple of years, the word is that the club are happy with their options and willing to wait and see who fulfils the elite potential they’re believed to have

Is that true? Even if they are planning on swooping for someone like Kelleher, we’d expect those leaking these sorts of things to claim they’re happy with what they have anyway, so it’s hard to know what to make of those briefs. We wouldn’t be surprised if they’re true – but we also wouldn’t be surprised if they’re just a smokescreen, and a serious Kelleher bid emerges in the summer.

For now it’s a case of waiting and seeing how the current crop get on between now and the end of the season.
