Benfica veteran Nicolas Otamendi has shared his thoughts on teammate Alvaro Carreras, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
The 22-year-old left-back has drawn attention in recent weeks, with reports suggesting that a move to Madrid could happen shortly after the Club World Cup.
Now, speaking after Benfica’s opening match in the tournament against Boca Juniors, Otamendi highlighted Carreras’ attitude and potential.
“Alvaro is a very humble and hard-working boy,” said Otamendi as quoted by MARCA. “If he gets the opportunity, and that will depend on him, I believe he can succeed [at Real Madrid].”
Carreras has been under the spotlight recently, especially with Benfica and Real Madrid both participating in the Club World Cup.
While Benfica manager Bruno Lage and president Rui Costa have addressed the rumours publicly, it is widely believed that Madrid intend to move forward with the signing after the tournament ends in the United States.

Real Madrid already have a personal agreement in place with Carreras. However, there is still one major hurdle left, that is Benfica.
The Portuguese club currently owns the defender’s rights and is demanding that Madrid pay his full release clause of €52 million to complete the transfer.
Meanwhile, it is ti be noted that Carreras featured in Benfica’s 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors, but his performance did not fully convince some observers.
While he showed signs of potential, critics felt he did not completely live up to the expectations associated with his hefty price tag. This included Benfica boss Lage, who analysed his performance, stating,
“He started the game very inconsistently , but then he improved. We’re very happy with him, and Alvaro is very happy to be at Benfica and it was a huge pleasure.”
Still, if Real Madrid are pushing for the transfer, the club must see something special in the young Spaniard.
Whether he ends up in Madrid or continues his development at Benfica, Carreras’ next few matches could play a big role in shaping his immediate future.
