Football League World look at three players who would fit perfectly in Frank Lampard’s squad
Coventry City have set off into the 2024/25 season with an extremely strong squad.
They made it to the play-offs last year and will be looking to repeat the trick again this term under Frank Lampard.
The Sky Blues managed to hold on to many of their top players with the likes of Jack Rudoni and Milan van Ewijk still at the club, but squads can always be improved.
Here, Football League World look at three players that would conclude a dream transfer window for the club…
Coventry’s squad is relatively stacked across the field, but the one area they are slightly light in is defence, with only Liam Kitching, Bobby Thomas and Joel Latibeaudiere as out-and-out central defenders.
Added to that, it’s a relatively young backline with the trio aged between 24-25.
Former Brentford and Burnley man Ben Mee is still looking for a new club after his release from the club, and has been linked with the likes of Sheffield United, suggesting he might be open to dropping down a level.
He’s racked up 277 Premier League games and 149 Championship games, so would undoubtedly add a level of experience to Lampard’s defence which is otherwise lacking.
There has been a substantial level of shock around Coventry that Van Ewijk remains a Sky Blues player, after a proposed move to Wolfsburg has stalled.
While the club may hold him past the end of this window, it gives the impression of a player with ambitions beyond the CBS Arena, and it’s unlikely to be the last of talks about moving away.
Any departure would leave Lampard reliant solely on new signing Kaine Kesler-Hayden.
Harry Clarke has proved a talented player at this level, making 35 appearances for Ipswich Town during their promotion season, but was put out on loan last term and is yet to appear for the Tractor Boys this season, despite their demotion.
A move away looks in the best interests of Clarke, and with his ability to play across the back four, it would not only prepare Lampard for any departure of Van Ewijk, but also provide extra cover throughout his defensive unit.
If Coventry can hold the likes of Rudoni, with Haji Wright, Ellis Simms, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ephron Mason-Clark in and around him, it doesn’t feel like the squad needs another headline attacking signing.
But Rudoni has not been short of interest this season, and at 24 years old, that is unlikely to fade if he maintains his current performance levels.
The Sky Blues could, therefore, look to get ahead of the game and begin bedding in a fresh talent to one day succeed the likes of Rudoni.
Jaden Heskey, son of Emile, is currently garnering attention in Manchester City’s academy, where a number of the brightest talents in the Premier League and Football League have been produced.
He turns 20 later this year and, with the Premier League side’s wealth of options in that area, a jump to the first team seems some way off.
Heskey is yet to pick up any senior experience, so Coventry may be wary of committing too many funds to the deal before seeing how he handles that transition, but a loan with an option to buy could work for both parties, with Coventry getting to trial the player, and Pep Guardiola’s side retaining some control over the situation if it goes incredibly well.
The likes of Rudoni will, of course, remain the main men, allowing Heskey to make the leap into senior football without too much expectation on his shoulders.
