An  interesting debate on BBC Sport, as neutrals, Aston Villa fans and the odd Newcastle fan contribute.

PSR naturally gets a mention or two.

Whilst even more predictably Alexander Isak becomes the focus and Liverpool fans getting involved.

BBC Sport ‘neutrals’ react to Jacob Ramsey moving for £40m from Aston Villa to Newcastle United:

‘Is this more PSR nonsense forcing teams to sell homegrown talent….?’

‘Yes, its ridiculous, surely it’s anti competitive and illegal.’

‘Newcastle will sell an academy player to Villa in the next window.’

‘Never really kicked on with us and took the next step up! Maybe new surroundings and Howe will make that happen for him! Wish JJ all the best.’

‘Think it is a good bit of business for Newcastle.’

‘So Newcastle (5th last season) have now signed players from Villa (6th last season) and Forest (7th last season) while resisting attempts from Liverpool (1st last season) to buy one of their players.

Considering most players at City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are on far too stupid wages for Newcastle to afford on their normal revenues, it seems they are doing a good job consolidating status.’

‘I’m not sure Newcastle have resisted Liverpool.’

‘They have, but Liverpool made it easy for them by not making a serious bid.

If Liverpool had bid £150M that would have been harder to resist, but to be fair, Liverpool aren’t a big club so they were never going to be able to afford £150m. #TrentWasRight.’

‘Don’t really understand the hate around Newcastle and this transfer, Howe has proven he is a top manager for developing talent, especially English talent so why would Ramsay not come and get Champions League football too.’

‘Don’t know what people are complaining about… it’s been a decent transfer window for Newcastle United.’

‘You’re joking, right? No replacement for Wilson, Isak, Dubravka, Willock and no cover for Botman when his knee goes (again).’

‘Just accept rejection.. he’s outgrown Newcastle. He knows it and the club knows it.’

‘And yet still you lot haven’t signed him yet lol.’

‘That’s because we operate responsibly.. we bid, you refused to negotiate.. end of discussion.

Doesn’t change the fact he’s outgrown Newcastle.

Doesn’t change the fact the toons are blaming every man and his dog for this.

We bid and then sat back as Newcastle lost control.. lost respect.. lost targets.. lost morals and then blamed everyone that spoke about it.’

‘Nothing responsible about releasing a media story in July saying you’re thinking of bidding £120m. Then nothing. Then hijacking our replacement. Then finally coming in with a bid that’s far too low to unsettle our player some more.’

‘Not really sure how Liverpool have lost out in anyway, shape or form.

Can still buy anyone they want.

And they just unsettled the best striker in the league who plays for one of their rivals.

Can’t see any downside at all.’

‘If they’d bid £150 million Newcastle would have sold. Every player at Newcastle, Liverpool, Man City et al has a price.’

‘A replacement for Sean Longstaff. Hopefully Eddie can improve him and his injuries are over. Welcome to the Toon.’

‘Nah, we’re well past hopefully.

We KNOW Eddie will improve him.

In Eddie we trust!’

‘Ramsdale, Thiaw, Ramsey, Elanga, Seung-Soo. If we had started the transfer window by saying we would sign all of these, and probably Wissa too, would you have said it was a great transfer window? I would! If we can get another striker to replace Isak, or get Isak back, then we should be rejoicing and praising our recruitment team.’

‘If being imprisoned by newcastle means £140k a week and kicking a ball in front of 50,000 adoring fans every other week then arrest me now!’

‘Birmingham fan.. there’s a good player there in Jacob Ramsey and Howe will as he always does get the best out of him. Howe is a brilliant manager.’

‘Villa fan, he’s a good player, sad to see him go. If no one stands on his foot he can make a real difference for Newcastle.’

‘Ramsey is a top professional and will improve massively with increased game time. Shame we had a hand up our back to make this move necessary, but that’s the way the PSR cookie crumbles these days. Surely something needs to change with that…… but all the very best for his Newcastle move! UTV.’

‘This feels a bit like the Gordon situation (minus the saga) where many people thought his signing was a waste of money and then it turned into value for money within 6 months.’

‘That seems to be a bit of a theme with our signings. Isak/Livramento/Hall/Tonali have all been accused of being overpriced but look like absolute bargains now.’
