Intriguing to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United outclassing Manchester United.
The comments from neutrals especially telling…
A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.
The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion though, the politics (almost!) entirely absent, concentrating on matters on the pitch…
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Manchester United fans and the odd Newcastle United supporter also contributing:
‘Another great win for the geordies. Man U look absolutely dreadful. But the commentary tonight was the worst of all. Totally Man U biased – flat when Newcastle were on the ball (and scored!) and totally upbeat whenever Man U had a sniff. Come on Sky – at least pretend to be objective.’
‘I haven’t seen Man Utd get dominated and outplayed as much as this since……their previous game
‘Ten Hag looks like a genius now!’
‘Kevin Keegan is loving it!!!’
‘He’ll love it even more if Man Utd get relegated.’
‘I think Newcastle decided to take the night off after 20 mins. To be fair they do have some big games coming, up like Bromley, so you can understand it.’
‘For most of Newcastle’s football history, games against the likes of Bromley would have been big games for them. Lest we forget, their last domestic trophy was 1955, and they did win the Inter City Fairs Cup in 1968-69 season.’
‘What a load of rubbish. 20 years ago they nearly won the premiership with one of the most entertaining football teams ever. Yes Newcastle have had some tough times but they have had some great times. Comparing to lower league teams (no disrespect to Bromley) is harsh and sounds quite bitter. Times are changing and it looks like Newcastle are playing good football. They were brilliant tonight.’
‘Man Utd are in this mess because of years of bad recruitment, and for handing out stupid contracts. For example, Rashford is earning £375,000 per week, whilst putting in zero effort. What kind of message does that send out to his team mates who aren’t on his pay level?’
‘Current top 5 team beating a team hovering near the relegation zone. As it should be.’
‘The 5 second silence from the commentators when Newcastle scored their second goal said everything about how biased the commentary was.’
‘And they drew the var line when the lad was over 1ft onside (really didn’t want to give it but had too – absolute magic).’
‘The best part was after watching the replay, Neville suddenly saw an imaginary hand-ball and tried to convince us that the goal would be disallowed. He must have been pig sick when the goal stood.’
‘Great win for UNITED.’
‘Leeds United have won more titles than Newcastle and they aren’t even in the prem.’
‘Leeds have won three top tier titles and Newcastle four…’
‘Newcastle, twice as big as Leeds.’
‘Newcastle have 4 titles, Leeds have 3. Leeds’ are more recent mainly because they were only formed in the 1910s after their predecessors were wound up for financial irregularities.
But at this stage it’s all ancient history. Newcastle are Premier League staples, Leeds are occasional top-tier botherers.’
‘Newcastle United won without getting out of 2nd gear.
As for Man United they need to improve if they are going to have any chance against other teams like,…erm…like Liverpool.’
‘It could have been a lot more given the early Newcastle chances.’
‘Using “United” when you mean Man United is so disrespectful to all the (non-glory seeker) fans who support all the other teams with United in their name.’
‘Manchester United doesn’t even make sense as a name. They aren’t united. Half the city supports City.’
‘Instead of all making fun of Man Utd how about a bit of credit for a fine performance from Newcastle ??’
‘there’s an unwritten rule that says “no english managers allowed in the premier league top six” and of course the foreign owners can do what they want.
but at least eddie howe at newcastle is getting a fair crack of the whip…
well done!!’
‘Saudi utd.’
‘Newcastle blew Man U away in the first 20 minutes
should have been 5 goals.’
‘But it wasn’t was it.’
‘2 was enough LOL’
‘Eddie Howe, proof that English coaches can succeed at the highest level. Newcastle Utd outplayed and outfought Man U in every dept.’
‘Watching that match reminded me of the Mike Ashley way to run a club. Bleed the fans dry and don’t invest in the club. Seems Ratcliffe follows a similar mantra.’
‘Man Utd fans should be ashamed of themselves, when Zirkzee was subbed off and they cheered him off.
Kid was in tears picked his jacket up and went straight to get changed. A disgrace, the whole team and the fans.’
‘Man Utd toothless and clueless. Embarrassment to the PL.
Well done Geordies though you should of won 5/6 nil.’
‘Imperious performance by Newcastle United! Should have scored more in a blistering 1st half & made Man Utd look very ordinary.
Consolidated 2nd half & deserved a great win & another clean sheet.
I don’t think any of those Man Utd players would get into Newcastle’s side. Bruno, Hall & Isak were absolutely superb!’
‘The story will be how poor Man Utd are. It should be how good Newcastle were.’
