Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig is the opening game of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season and it kicks off tonight from the Allianz Arena. Ole Werner takes charge of his first Bundesliga game as RB Leipzig boss and it doesn’t get any tougher with a trip to the champions. This is everything you need to know.

The Team News

For Bayern Munich, the Champions will be without Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Hiroki itō and Tom Bischof. Aleksandar Pavlović is a doubt so it remains to be seen whether Vincent Kompany includes him in the squad.

During his press conference yesterday morning, Kompany did confirm that Pavlović had trained this week:

“He’s trained well. Of course, he hasn’t played a game yet, but I believe it won’t be long before he’ll be back.”

On the Leipzig side, Ole Werner confirmed in his press conference that Lukas Klostermann, Tidiam Gomis and Andrija Maksimovic returned to training but they won’t be available for tonight. Benjamin Henrichs continues rehab following an Achilles tendon tear. New signing Rômulo is available for them tonight.

When asked about Bayern Munich, Ole Werner said:

“We’ve watched all of Bayern’s recent games, including the Supercup in Stuttgart. As a team, they know how to play together and they are continuing to play the same style that we saw from them last season, both in and out of possession. There haven’t been any major surprises from FC Bayern. However, they play at a level that not only won them the Bundesliga last season but that also puts them amongst the best teams in Europe. What we’ve seen from them so far only confirms that we will be up against a very tough challenge.”

The Head-to-Head Record

Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig have met 18 times in the Bundesliga since the latter secured promotion to the top flight in 2016.

Bayern Munich have won 9 of those meetings, scoring 38 times. There have been 7 draws too, which include 2 goalless games and two 3-3 games.

In that same time, RB Leipzig have achieved just 2 victories over tonight’s opponents (one at home, 18th March 2018, and one away, 20th May 2023). Whilst in most meetings they’ve been somewhat competitive, beating Bayern Munich tonight will be a very tricky task.

Who Are the Players to Watch Out For?

On the Bayern Munich side of things, Michael Olise is definitely one to keep a close eye on. His flair, his quality, and his creativity off the wand of that left foot are all a joy to watch, and he can be a real handful for RB Leipzig. If they give him any space to operate in, he’ll exploit it in devastating fashion

For RB Leipzig, summer signing Johan Bakayoko will be a handful to deal with. He has explosive speed, is quick with the ball at his feet, and has that ability to make something happen out of nothing. Whether he starts or not is to be seen, but on counterattacks, he could be really dangerous.

The Predicted Lineups

Bayern Munich (4-2-3-1) – Neuer, Upamecano, Tah, Stanicic, Kimmich, Goretzka, Gnabry, Olise, Luis Díaz, Kane

RB Leipzig (4-3-3) – Gulácsi, Baku, Willi Orban, Lukeba, Raum, Schlager, Seiwald, Simons, Yan Diomande, Loïs Openda, Nusa

Score Prediction

Bayern Munich 4-3 RB Leipzig

This is a game where defence comes last. Bayern Munich are very aggressive, very front-footed, and they play a very high line, which could leave them vulnerable to the counterattack. RB Leipzig have quality and they have plenty of dynamism, speed and explosive acceleration, which could prove a big problem for the Bayern Munich defence. The two centre backs in particular aren’t the quickest around.

Bayern Munich should have enough attacking firepower to edge out RB Leipzig in an opening night thriller. This will be a very exciting game that you will not want to miss.
