The international break has brought some disappointing injury news for Bayern Munich. Manuel Neuer has suffered a setback in his recovery from a muscle injury that he sustained in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 clash against Bayer Leverkusen at Allianz Arena.
Since suffering the injury at the start of March, Neuer has been on the sidelines. Jonas Urbig has started in the last three games across all competitions. Urbig will likely keep his place in the starting lineup after the international break.
According to Sky Sports in Germany, Neuer suffered a setback in training on Friday. The German goalkeeper looks certain to miss the next two Bundesliga games. His participation in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Inter Milan in the first week of April is also looking unlikely.
It is a significant setback for Bayern since Neuer’s quality and experience are crucial for Bayern in the big Champions League games.
The last three games across all competitions have shown exactly why Bayern rates Urbig so highly and went all out for him in the winter transfer window. The young German goalkeeper has looked confident in the goal and comfortable with the ball.
Despite the error against Union Berlin before the international break, Urbig has shown enough glimpses of his potential in the last three games. It is difficult to replace Neuer in the starting XI, but the Bavarian faithful should be confident that Urbig can do a decent job in the upcoming games, provided he gets the support from his team.
Considering his age and injuries in the last few years, Bayern will not rush Neuer back into action and allow him to recover completely and be ready for the second half of April. In an ideal scenario, Neuer should make his return in the away leg against Inter Milan on April 16.
Meanwhile, Bayern are hopeful of seeing Aleksandar Pavlovic return to action after the international break. The young German midfielder has missed the last few games due to illness. He also missed out on playing for Germany during the international break as he is continuing his recovery.
Kim Min-jae is also facing a race against time to be fit for the game against Inter Milan. The South Korean defender missed the game against Union Berlin due to an Achilles injury. He is expected to be back in training in the next few days.
