Florian Wirtz is aiming to be fit for the Europa League final next Wednesday as he has been struggling with a thigh injury.

Wirtz has been struggling with a thigh injury he picked up against Borussia Dortmund and he has only been able to make a cameo against Roma in the second leg of the Europa League.

Today the 21-year-old trained individually and is a potential doubt for Leverkusen’s final game of the season at home to Augsburg on Saturday. Sporting director Simon Rolfles commented on Wirtz’s situation: “Whether it will be enough for Saturday, we’re relaxed about that. Florian is making good progress. Things are looking good for next week” Head coach Xabi Alonso echoed a similar sentiment: “I talked to Flo after training, his feeling was better, but we must not be too fast and must take the right steps. We look day after day at how his feeling and pain develop and then decide what happens next. There is no risk of a serious injury.”

This is one of the biggest weeks in Leverkusen’s history, especially since their fateful 2002 season where in just over a week they lost the league, DFB Pokal and Champions League.

On Saturday, they will be presented with the Bundesliga trophy, next Wednesday they travel to Dublin to play Atalanta in the Europa League final before facing Kaiserslautern in Berlin in the DFB Pokal final. They can do all of this while remaining unbeaten as well.

For Leverkusen to be able to go the whole season unbeaten they will need Wirtz who has been one of their best players this season, scoring 18 and assisting 19 in 46 games.
