La Liga giants Barcelona are set to make use of a player’s release clause to secure a signing for just the 5th time in their history this summer.

That’s according to Diario Sport, who point towards Joan García as the latest addition to the exclusive club.

Goalkeeper Joan is of course expected to be unveiled as a Barcelona player any day now, after long agreeing on the terms of a contract with the Blaugrana.

After Espanyol refused to negotiate the financial terms of the transfer, Deco and co. were left with no other option than to activate the 24-year-old’s release clause at the RCDE Stadium.

Joan will set Barca back a sum of €25 million.

And as alluded to above, in the process, the Spanish shot-stopper will join an exclusive club.

As per Sport, only four times in their storied history have Barcelona agreed to sign a player by paying the entirety of their release clause.

The four prior cases? Rivaldo, Seydou Keita, Clément Lenglet, and Antoine Griezmann.
