Paris Saint-Germain was one of several clubs eyeing Athletic Club’s standout player, Nico Williams. Despite the summer window now closed, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano provided the latest on this file.

During the summer transfer window, Williams drew attention from top clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Spurs, Barcelona, and PSG.

Following an impressive 2023-24 season, where he made 37 appearances for Athletic Club in all competitions, Williams played a crucial role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph in Germany. It’s no wonder his performances caught the eye of some of Europe’s biggest teams.

In his latest Daily Briefing column for CaughtOffside, Romano notes that Williams is keeping all his options open ahead of next year’s summer window.

“Nico Williams mentioned he wanted to stay (with Athletic) one more year. What does it mean? It means that next summer, the possibility of clubs returning for him is strong,” Romano wrote.

“Nico considering his options is something that we have to follow, because Barcelona’s interest is still there. Chelsea have had the player on their list since 2023 – even before the fantastic Euros he had with Spain – and also Arsenal really appreciate him. We will see what happens but, for sure, the new situation next summer could be an interesting one.”

Barcelona standout Lamine Yamal stated in an interview that he hopes the Catalan will sign the player if he is available next year after failing to do so this past summer.

“I’d love to play every week with Nico Williams as part of my squad! He’s my good friend,” Yamal told El Hormiguero. “I don’t know if he will join Barça next season, it’s up to Nico.”
