Barcelona have come up with a new strategy to sign Nico Williams, according to an update from SPORT.

The Catalan giants have been facing major problems in their negotiations with Athletic Club, as relations between the two clubs have worsened recently.

This has made the transfer of the Spanish winger quite tricky. However, it now seems likely that Barcelona will pay Nico’s €60 million release clause this week to complete the deal.

The club’s sporting director, Deco, believes the investment is too big to risk by waiting for Athletic to agree on favourable terms.

Instead, Barcelona are determined to pay the release clause directly and avoid further delays.

Barça offer a safety net

Barcelona know Nico has some worries about joining because of the possibility of registration issues with La Liga.

To calm his fears, the club has offered a unique solution: a clause in his contract that lets him negotiate with other teams if there are registration problems after he signs.

This gives Nico peace of mind without risking Barça’s big financial commitment.

Under this clause, any club wanting to sign Nico in case of a registration issue would have to pay the same €60 million release clause, plus inflation.

This way, Barça protect their investment even if things do not go as planned. Although adding such an escape option is unusual in these kinds of deals, the club understands the player’s position and want to show goodwill.

The club is fully confident they will complete Nico’s registration without any problems and have worked hard to ensure they can fit his wages within La Liga’s financial rules.

They are optimistic that Nico will accept the offer soon. The plan is to finalise everything in the next five days, so the winger can skip Athletic Club’s pre-season training starting July 9 and instead join Barça’s camp under Flick on July 13.
