The coming summer transfer window has the capacity to be a special one for Barcelona, especially considering that the administration no longer fears facilitating a big-name departure.

Bernardo Silva, thus, has re-emerged as a top contender to join Xavi’s force this summer. One of the best players in his position, the attacking midfielder-cum-winger would be a valuable addition to the Blaugrana core.

Manchester City’s ploy?

According to reports from SPORT, however, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are in favour of Silva’s exit and have planned a very deep ploy to ensure he leaves the club.

The English champions are aware that they have squeezed the best years of Silva’s career and that he is now past his prime.

Thus, they intentionally inserted a €58 million release clause for this summer, so as to attract buyers while they play the acting game of holding on.

If, for instance, Barcelona attempts to sign the likes of Phil Foden or Rodri, they would face serious resistance as the man in blue see them as an integral part of the future.

Barcelona’s doubts

It is clear that the Catalans’ administration know of City’s ploy. Needless to say, members of the board are sceptical of the move at various levels.

For starters, Silva occupies the same position on the field as Lamine Yamal, a player who has proven to be one of the best in the world in his position at a tender age. Incorporating the Portuguese star would directly hamper Yamal’s minutes.

Some would claim Silva’s versatility at this juncture and state that he can play as a midfielder. In such a scenario, however, Barcelona will be forced into the sale of a talented, and likely younger name, in midfield.

The third, and final reason Barcelona bears doubt is the player’s age. At 30 years of age, giving Silva a three-year contract and shelling out €60 million for the same, after all, appears to be pushing it.
