Barcelona would consider letting Frenkie de Jong leave the club this summer, but Manchester United are not considering making an effort to be his destination at the moment. The Dutch midfielder seems highly unlikely to leave the club this summer due to an ankle injury, but United were linked with him again earlier this week by sources in England.

The issue may well be his asking price rather than his fitness though. Matteo Moretto has explained to Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing that not only are United focused on moving for Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte currently, but the cost of getting de Jong out of Barcelona remains too high currently.

According to Moretto, Barcelona could let de Jong leave for a fee in excess of €60m. However the €60m would be a fixed fee, and more would have to be added in variables, without taking into account the large wages de Jong is on.

Some sources have de Jong on more than €30m this season due to his deferred wages from the pandemic. The reports earlier this week noted that United would be willing to do a deal for €30-40m which is clearly a long way from Barcelona’s asking price. Nevertheless, with Barcelona keen to bring in reinforcements beyond Dani Olmo, namely Nico Williams, any sales are beneficial for the Blaugrana.
