Andreas Christensen’s standing at Barcelona has shifted dramatically in recent days. Once placed on the market due to a surplus of centre-backs, the Dane is now viewed as indispensable following Inigo Martinez’s exit, which opens the door to a more prominent role this season.

Christensen’s contract runs until 2026, but with just one year left, the club is now keen to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer.

According to SPORT, the sporting management is now considering a one-year renewal, with talks expected to begin once the transfer window closes at the end of August.

The 29-year-old has made his intentions clear, turning down interest from Saudi Arabia and the Premier League to focus on Barcelona. He has long expressed his desire to stay until the end of his deal and informed the club after last season that he would not be leaving.

Flick has used him as a regular in pre-season, valuing his professionalism, calmness on the ball, and ability to play both as a centre-back and defensive midfielder.

Injuries wrecked his last season, and a January move to Brentford fell apart after another injury setback. Now fully fit, Christensen is ready to fight for minutes alongside Pau Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, and Eric Garcia. The coaching staff sees him as one of the players who could define the season.

By moving early, Barcelona aim to strengthen their defensive depth while protecting themselves from losing an experienced and trusted player for nothing in 2026.
