Barcelona are weighing the future of experienced defender Inigo Martinez as discussions around his contract renewal gain traction, according to Marca.

While Martinez has impressed this season, the club is in no hurry to trigger or extend his current deal, which includes an automatic renewal clause set to activate if specific criteria are met.

The 32-year-old’s contract, expiring in June 2025, allows for a one-year extension if he plays at least 60 percent of the team’s matches, with a minimum of 45 minutes per game.

Martinez has participated in 15 matches this season, placing him halfway to fulfilling the requirement.

However, Barcelona’s management remains cautious, preferring to assess his performance over time rather than rushing into a decision.

A key factor complicating matters is Martinez’s significant salary, which exceeds €12 million gross per season.

If the renewal clause is activated, this high wage would remain part of Barcelona’s already strained financial structure.

With Financial Fair Play regulations looming over the club, officials are exploring alternatives, including restructuring his salary with performance-based incentives to ease the burden.

Another consideration is the imminent return of key defenders Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen, whose availability in January will increase competition for spots in central defence.

Martinez’s place in the line-up could come under threat, making his ongoing performance crucial to securing a long-term role at the club.

Despite media speculation suggesting an early renewal offer, Barcelona are adopting a wait-and-see approach. They intend to monitor Martinez’s consistency and contribution before deciding whether to commit to an extension.

While his experience and reliability have been assets, the club aims to ensure any decision aligns with their long-term sporting and financial objectives.

Martinez’s future could also depend on his ability to adapt to the increasing competition and maintain a regular starting role.

With manager Hansi Flick prioritising merit-based selections, the defender faces pressure to perform at his peak amidst a strengthened defensive line-up.

Barcelona must strike a balance between retaining a dependable veteran and managing their financial responsibilities.
