Cole Palmer was back his best today as Chelsea beat Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, and after full time the airways were full of praise for the attacker.

He played a vital role in the first goal with a lovely moment as he sent Curtis Jones out to the wing before swivelling back inside and playing in Pedro Neto, who set up Enzo Fernandez. He played an important role in the second goal too, as it was his run down the right and cross in which caused the chaos from which the own goal came.

After that his role was more reserved, but time and again he helped his team up the pitch with a nice touch or turn. He also hit the post and was unlucky to not see the ball go in. He finally got his reward right at the end where he scored a penalty. He already had been awarded the man of the match award – this was just a nice way to break his long goal drought.

Media hail Palmer’s return to form

“He has deserved that Cole Palmer – he has been the difference. The class act on the pitch from minute one to minute 96,” Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

On BBC 5Live, former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin was also full of praise:

“Brilliant moment for the fans, manager and the club because they needed the win. They all wanted Palmer to score, he’s been getting better for weeks and he has chosen just the right way to turn it on.”

Speaking to Sky Sports at full time, his teammate Moises Caicedo said much the same thing:

“Cole he’s an amazing guy. Always trains hard, so happy for him. He helps us a lot even when he didn’t score.”
