Atletico Madrid’s reported interest in Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has sparked fresh speculation over the Uruguayan’s future at Anfield. According to Caught Offside, sources close to the situation suggest Diego Simeone is a keen admirer of the forward as he looks to reshape his attack.
With uncertainty surrounding Antoine Griezmann’s long-term future at the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico are exploring multiple striking options, including Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta and Wolves’ Fabio Silva, who is currently on loan at Las Palmas. However, Nunez stands out as a realistic target due to Liverpool’s reported willingness to let him leave.
Signed from Benfica in a deal worth up to £85 million, Nunez arrived with huge expectations. While there have been flashes of brilliance, his inconsistency in front of goal and struggles to adapt tactically have been well-documented.
Liverpool’s new boss Arne Slot has reportedly been critical of Nunez, hinting at a potential summer departure. The Dutchman’s comments could be a signal to the board that he wants a more reliable option in attack.
Despite some memorable moments in a red shirt, including match-winning performances, the 25-year-old has failed to establish himself as an undisputed starter. With Liverpool looking to refresh their frontline, cashing in on Nunez could help fund a move for a more clinical forward.
Atletico Madrid could provide the perfect environment for Nunez to rediscover his best form. La Liga’s slightly less physical and more technical nature might suit his style better than the high-intensity demands of the Premier League.
Simeone has previously revitalised strikers who have struggled elsewhere, and Nunez’s raw attributes—pace, power, and work rate—would align well with Atletico’s counter-attacking system.

That said, Atletico are also considering alternatives. Mateta’s excellent form for Crystal Palace makes him an attractive option, while Wolves might be open to offloading Silva permanently. If Liverpool do sanction Nunez’s exit, they will need to be sure they have a suitable replacement lined up.
Liverpool fans will undoubtedly have mixed feelings about this report. While Nunez has frustrated at times, his ability to stretch defences and his work rate cannot be questioned. However, the reality is that elite-level clubs demand consistent end product, something the Uruguayan has struggled to provide.
If Slot has indeed made up his mind, then Liverpool must ensure they replace Nunez with a top-tier finisher. A player of Alexander Isak or Victor Osimhen’s calibre would be ideal, given the pressing and finishing ability they would bring to the team.
Another consideration is whether Liverpool should be strengthening a potential Champions League rival. Atletico, if they sign Nunez and he rediscovers his Benfica form, could be a force in Europe. But if Liverpool use the funds wisely, this could be a move that ultimately benefits all parties.
