While everyone else is focused on transfers in this final week of the window, Simon Johnson has chosen his article for the Athletic this week to discuss a move which didn’t happen.

Unlike last summer, where he was actively pushed out of the club, and the January before that where he was also offered around, Trevoh Chalobah has remained at Chelsea this summer and seen his importance grow rather than shrink.

After playing a key role in the Blues’ successful second half of last season, the defender continued to show his importance for Enzo Maresca by playing regularly at the Club World Cup too.

It’s noted that he started both the Conference League and Club World Cup finals, as well as the full games in the semi and quarter final of the latter. Maresca values him, and since then we’ve lost Levi Colwill to injury, making Chalobah even more important.

“Yes, Chelsea would have been prepared to listen to offers this summer, as they are with many members of the squad… But it was not like he was being pushed out like 12 months ago.”

Because of that, while “there have been some gentle enquiries from mid-table Premier Clubs over the past few months,” Chalobah has stayed put.

Chalobah prepares for most significant Chelsea season yet

Johnson concludes that Chalobah “has a big role to play at Chelsea this season,” and we’d have to agree. If we don’t sign a new defender, this could end up being his most important season yet in terms of appearances.

There is a major reward at the end of it in the form of a World Cup with England – it’s all lining up perfectly for Trevoh to become a Three Lions regular.
