Come the final whistle yesterday or Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United yesterday there was a sense of disbelief that swept over the Manchester City fans, players and Pep Guardiola. The world champions had inexplicably thrown away a 1 goal lead in two minutes of utter madness. They had cost themselves the 195th Manchester derby with a capitulation that mirrored City’s collapse against Feyenoord only a few weeks ago. Coming out of the game, it appears uncertain where Manchester City can turn next after yesterday’s heartbreaking defeat.
Throughout the second half yesterday you did get the sense that Pep Guardiola’s side was scared of making an error. The usual free-flowing football wasn’t there throughout the second half as City allowed Manchester United back into the game. Josko Gvardiol’s header had given City the lead in the first half. But come the second half the game changed. It always felt like a moment could swing the game in United’s favour. That’s exactly what transpired.
First, it was two costly errors from Matheus Nunes. His backpass played in Amad Diallo. He then conceded a penalty in his determination to atone for his earlier error. That allowed Bruno Fernandes to equalise in the 88th minute. That moment knocked the stuffing out of Pep Guardiola’s side. Minutes later it would get a whole lot worse when a simple ball over the top of the City defence played in Amad Diallo. The winger rounded Ederson to score the winner and condemn Manchester City to their 8th defeat in 11 games. Now, it appears uncertain where the City turn next.
Speaking after the devastating defeat Pep Guardiola believes he isn’t good enough. In quotes relayed on the official Premier League website he said: “The results are not good, the game was not exceptional. I know the situation, I understand but the reality is this. They have to know that these situations happen. In the box you have to be careful. It’s not about Matheus [Nunes, who conceded the penalty], he played really good in not his position at full-back. But it’s not about that, we have to play better. The result will help us to take our best but right now we don’t have it. The way I learn is to keep going. I’m not good enough. I am the boss, the manager, I have to find solutions and so far I haven’t. That’s the reality. We want to play better, create chances. But at the moment it’s not possible.”
Based on Pep Guardiola’s comments after yesterday’s devastating defeat to Manchester United it is uncertain where the world champions turn to snap their recent slump. Yesterday’s match was almost a must-win match at the Etihad for City’s season. For so long they appeared on the cusp of a crucial derby victory. That was until it was taken away. It now appears uncertain as to how they world champions get their way out of this current slump. They simply have to but yesterday’s defeat may take some time to heal for Pep Guardiola’s team especially to fall to their arch-rival in such a manner.
