Things couldn’t be going much better for Aston Villa, who head into Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Bologna unbeaten in their last nine games.

An impressive 3-1 win at Fulham on Saturday saw them move up to fourth in the Premier League standings and now they look to maintain their winning run in Europe.

Unai Emery’s men have won both of their opening Champions League games without conceding a goal, against Young Boys and Bayern Munich.

That start has left them sixth in the new league format and now they look to continue their fine form when they play host to Bologna on Tuesday evening (20:00 – TNT Sports 1).

Emery continues to prove doubters wrong

It’s fair to say Emery has worked wonders at Villa Park and the club are now reaping the benefits of the manager’s experience and knowhow.

Winning the Europa League three times with Sevilla, as well as claiming a Ligue 1 title success with PSG highlights Emery’s pedigree.

There were question marks hanging over him when he was appointed by Villa in November 2022 due to a disappointing 18-month stint at Arsenal.

The 52-year-old has proved the doubters wrong, though, and he has a 55.32% win rate as Villa boss. A 1-0 success over Bayern in Gameweek Two has been the highlight of his tenure to date and he will expect another success on Tuesday.

Villa face a Bologna team who have collected just one point from their opening two games, in what is their first experience of the Champions League.

The Italians showed in their last match at Liverpool that they can pose a threat, but they leak goals, conceding 11 in their opening eight Serie A games this season.

Vincenzo Italiano’s men go into this clash having drawn their last three games in their domestic league, including a 2-2 share of the spoils at Genoa last weekend.

Aston Villa vs Bologna Team News

Villa are expected to make at least a couple of changes from the side who started the game at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

John McGinn was named on the bench against Fulham and could start in midfield, while Ezri Konsa is pushing for a role in the back four.

Ross Barkley is another who Emery will be considering, while youngster Jaden Philogene is available despite his red card on Saturday.

Bologna are still without long-term injury victim Lewis Ferguson, but Swiss international Dan Ndoye could return after a spell on the sidelines.

Rules state Englishman Samuel Iling-Junior can play against his parent club, but he missed the Genoa game with an injury and is doubtful.

Forward Nicolo Cambiaghi (knee) and midfielder Michel Aebischer (adductor) could also miss out.
