Since Eddie Howe arrived at Newcastle United, Aston Villa fans have seen their team face NUFC on six occasions in the Premier League.
United have won five of the six.
Indeed, the last three meetings, Aston Villa fans seeing their team lose all three and concede 11 and Villa score only twice.
This match kicks off a massive week for Aston Villa fans and their team.
Having exited the Champions League in midweek, Villa have two massive matches in the Premier League at home to Newcastle today and away at Man City on Tuesday, before then an FA Cup semi-final against Palace next Saturday.
Lose all three and their season almost certainly wrecked, win all three and they would be absolutely buoyant again, an FA Cup final to look forward to and they’d almost certainly then be one of the favourites to qualify for the Champions League.
As Newcastle United fans we are well aware of just how fine these margins can be, the difference between success and relative failure.
Aston Villa fans commenting via their Villa Talk message board:
‘Newcastle are a quality side. In incredible form. We playing them on top of their game just like we did against PSG.
Win would be huge and send out a big message to the PL that we’re the real deal.’
‘Would take Isak and Tonali from their team but that’s it.’
‘Guimaeres, Livramento and Hall would probably all get in our team too. Would pick Rogers over Gordon but it’s close. I’d say Konsa, Torres, Martinez and Tielemans would all get in their team. Murphy is having a freak season but id pick Malen or Asensio over him all day long.
Thing about Newcastle is it’s not about how good they are individually. Jacob Murphy is mediocre in terms of talent, as is Burn who is a clogger, but these guys look bloody brilliant in Newcastle’s well oiled machine and it seems like every match their players are bang on it 100%.
If we play to our absolute maximum which we do less often than Newcastle, we should win, because we have more technically gifted players in our team in the attacking areas. But that’s a big if because we are not as consistent in our performances as Newcastle are.’
‘Hope the ref doesn’t let the likes of Linton and Tomali get away with too much.’

‘There’s an enormous amount to like about Newcastle, it’s a proper football town, they care deeply, they’ve been through the hard bit and earned some success.
Whenever I’ve been up there for games, the people have been brilliant; they’re friendly, they’re generous and they’re welcoming – perhaps I’ve been lucky, but it’s hard to dislike the people you meet in Newcastle and their support for the team.
I get that there’s another side to that and that collectively they’re a bunch of bizarrely optimistic dreamers with a massive overestimation of their own self importance, but y’know, aren’t we all?
Their team, when they’ve got that middle three together, is a match for anyone and if we’ve got a post PSG hangover of any sort, they’re more than capable of knocking us over, we’ll have to be at our very best today to get anything from them.’
‘They’ve won 6 in a row, since the Palace loss we’ve won 9 out of 10.
We’re the two most in form teams.
Concern for us is hangover from Tuesday; a lot of energy and emotion expended.
Although Newcastle played Wednesday, Palace were so poor it wasn’t any sort of test.’
‘They’ve reached 32 games with Joelinton and Burn on 9 yellow cards apiece, which means they’re finally allowed to get booked again. So they won’t, despite the inevitable thuggery.’
‘I feel worse than I did Tuesday, bloody hate these lot. The first 10-15 mins are massive here.’
‘Big test today
IMO Newcastle are dead certs for top 5, so it isn’t so much playing against a competitor for that, it’s the 3 points. We need to keep the pressure on Forest and Chelsea, as need to finish ahead of both (both are away).
It’s also a test for Unai – he knows how important this is. He wants CL next season again, and knows how vital it is financially to ensure this progress doesn’t stall. He’s got to get the team and tactics right.
But mainly it’s for the players in my view. The heights we hit on Tuesday (2nd half) was great – but if they cannot maintain that today, then we might find out who just is not up to the task, and will likely be shipped out this summer.
But that won’t happen, as we have to win.’
‘Think Newcastle play better football than us with the amount of goals they score and how they suffocate teams, also think they have a better atmosphere at home games (although the atmosphere against PSG has made me think for the really big games Villa Park is up there).
We need a big performance today, we’re up against a very strong team.’
‘We only had 10 players on the pitch at St James’ Park, I don’t doubt Newcastle’s quality but Gordon scored their first from cutting in front the left, after that we went down to 10, Barnes has always been a thorn in our side. Onana should balance the midfield more for us, Joelinton is a great player though, highly underrated by the press.’
‘We have to be aggressive against them we can’t let them bully us. I think it’s a game for Onana and Mcginn.’
‘Newcastle are a very difficult prospect whenever they’re got their middle three together – Tonali, the unbookable Joelinton and Guimaraes are a serious trio.
I think we might see a draw.’
‘Why does it always seem like we play these when they’re bang in form?’
‘Assuming we now have a fully fit squad with Barkley and Bailey back, it’s very difficult to predict what Emery will do here? One thing that may go in our favour is that the Newcastle side pretty much picks itself barring one or two. I wonder if Emery will go strong with height, physicality and power initially and then look to make his changes from sixty minutes where he injects more pace into our forward positions.
2-1 win but it’s going to be a real fight and it could go down to our second half changes again that swings it.’
‘Every one of their players will be on the front foot……maybe we should select ours in the same format.
Most comments I have heard is based on out scoring them, maybe that’s right….We will see, but I have a feeling they have another view.
Without having any plan to stop them, I feel is naive, but I hope the boys prove me wrong.’
‘Match their intensity and we win. We’re at home and we are the better team in terms of quality.
Two great midfield/attacks with shaky defences when under the cosh. Gonna be goals.’
‘Newcastle’s big weakness is so dead obvious and glaring that it almost begs not to be repeated. And no, it’s not their dim supporters.
This: They can’t defend when you get them on the backfoot.
This pattern of falling apart was on full display when they lost badly to Bournemouth and when little Fulham beat them at St. James. Their defenses can be slow and ponderous to transition and can’t track back any more than Isak can run slow. They make errors. They miss passes. They don’t respond well to one-on-one ball losses.
Yes, their forward drives are scary energetic, but we need to keep the lid closed as tightly as possible and not let the nuclear fission chain-reactions even begin.’
‘It will be won or lost in midfield.
This game will be tougher than against PSG
It took PSG 1 and a half games to get 5 goals against us…..It took Newcastle 1 game.
We need to be alert boys.’
‘Most entertaining teams in the premier league this year, should be a great game just hope no silly refereeing decisions spoil it like they did away, if we lose it will be by more than a couple, if we win it will be close, I’m going 2-1 to us.
Isac is the best striker in the league for me, key battles, Rashford against their CB and Cash against Barnes or Gordon if he’s back.’
‘Newcastle have shown in their game, unchallenged elements will give them the edge….we have to compete with them and subdue their enthusiasm.
Both teams given time and space can hurt anyone….It’s the team who denies the others threat, who will come out on top.
Ps We showed in the second half against PSG a concerted effort of desire, can take us anywhere…..beyond the realms of what we thought we was capable of….unless we compete, we don’t know how far we can go.’
‘I guess we’ll see soon how much the PSG took out of them. I’m guessing a lot, but hoping we’re wanting to push on.’
‘Being able to rotate will be huge – a fresh Garcia, Malen and Maatsen and Ross is back.’
‘We need 3 points more than them and I hope that’s the difference. They are a very good team. The likes of Bruno, Tonali and Isak are top players that would walk in to most teams. Then you have players like Joelinton, Murphy, Barnes that are no slouches either. Go around the whole team and there’s no real obvious weakness to exploit.
So it’s all about imposing ourselves at home as Emery would say. Crowd behind the Villa players and on Newcastles back throughout. Make it a really difficult game for them like when we did them 3-0 a couple of seasons back.
Fatigue could be a factor but we have the players that can come in and do a job.’
‘We are better than them. If we play at our best, we win, and there isn’t a damn thing they can do about it. That’s a fact.’
‘I’m as concerned about a hangover from the emotional intensity of Tuesday as most, as well as Newcastle’s style being kryptonite-ish to us. I don’t like corruption conspiracy theories but the protection they get from officials is very, very suspicious.’
