Aston Villa are close to completing a deal to sign Ross Barkley from Luton Town, according to The Guardian.

Despite the transfer window not officially opening until June 14, activity is expected to gather pace following the conclusion of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign last weekend.

Barkley led his side in successful dribbles, long balls, passes and shots per game this season, although his efforts could not save the Hatters from suffering relegation.

He is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs and could now be set for a move to Villa Park this summer.

Current Villa manager Unai Emery sees the Englishman as a valuable addition who would provide much-needed depth in Villa’s midfield.

A ‘modest’ transfer fee has reportedly been agreed, making this a potentially shrewd piece of business.

Barkley previously spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Villa and showed glimpses of his potential.

His familiarity with the club’s environment and existing players could aid a smoother transition this time around.

The midfielder’s style of play suits Villa’s current tactical framework, which relies on a balanced mix of possession-based football and quick counter-attacks.

His ability to break lines with his dribbling and passing would complement John McGinn and Douglas Luiz.

Having previously tasted European success with Chelsea, Barkley would be keen to make an impact for Villa in their Champions League campaign next season.
