AS Monaco have been dealt a serious blow in their efforts to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, whose wage and bonus demands are deemed too high.

Onana has endured two erratic seasons at United since joining the club from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023.

He has been United’s undisputed number one but has never truly been convincing with his performances. Last term saw him make multiple high-profile mistakes that dearly cost United during games.

The Cameroonian was sidelined at various points during the 2024/25 season, but his understudy, Altay Bayindir, failed to make a convincing case when given the chance. This has left United facing a significant dilemma between the sticks.

Like Bayindir, Onana is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford. He has been mentioned to be on the radar of Saudi Pro League clubs but they’re not his only suitors. A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Monaco also have him on their list.

Fabrizio Romano later clarified that no discussions had taken place between Monaco and Onana’s camp, yet speculation linking the goalkeeper with a move to the Ligue 1 side has continued to linger.

Now, Mike McGrath of The Telegraph has indicated that there has been some level of contact but Onana’s financial demands mean that a deal is unlikely to get over the line.

According to McGrath, “Monaco’s pursuit of André Onana has hit a major stumbling block over personal terms for the Manchester United goalkeeper.”

“The Ligue 1 club have shortlisted Onana as a potential summer signing but are resigned to his salary and bonus package being out of their reach for now, leaving a deal looking extremely unlikely at this stage of the window.”

It’s understood Onana wants to stay at United and prove himself to Ruben Amorim next season.

But, there are still some clubs interested in him and an exit can’t be entirely ruled out.

Some potential replacements of Onana that have been mentioned to be on United’s radar include Senne Lammens (Royal Antwerp), Emi Martinez (Aston Villa), Lucas Chevalier (Lille) and Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton).

One goalkeeper who is guaranteed to stay at United is Tom Heaton, who has an agreement in place with the club over a new one-year deal.
