The context 📅

The Rouge et Blanc approached this top-level match with confidence, having won five straight matches in the Principality including their last against Nice in the Derby (2-1). But also with a measure of caution, after a defeat suffered in the reverse fixture at the Vélodrome (2-1), especially since it would be the battle for the podium and with it qualification in the Champions League which would be at stake.

They like to build up their defensive play, with Geronimo Rulli in particular, who makes himself very available to restart play. Adrien Rabiot is in fantastic form at the moment, and Mason Greenwood could be decisive, making the difference with his dribbling, technique, and pace.

The XI 👥

To meet this challenge, coach Adi Hütter made just one change compared to recent league outings. In the absence of the suspended Christian Mawissa, Wilfried Singo took his place in central defence, while Vanderson had the opportunity to return to the starting lineup on the right flank.

The scenario 🎞

The match kicked off in a fiery atmosphere at a packed Stade Louis-II. Marseille’s opening burst of pressure led to Luis Henrique’s first attempt hitting the side netting (13′).

The response was somewhat timid, but it was would soon be a success. Takumi Minamino, first failed to find the net (23′)  but it only postponed the opener, as on a loose ball in the box, Denis Zakaria perfectly set up the Japanese playmaker who finished perfectly with his right foot (1-0, 34′)!

Taki’, the difference maker!

Taki’ scored his third goal to open the scoring, and his fifth goal this season in the top flight, thanks to the Swiss midfielder’s third assist. Halftime finally came after Vanderson’s last-minute shot from wide was saved by Rulli (44′).

And the second half got off to a flying start, with two dangerous headers from the Rouge et Blanc at corners. Singo’s first at the near post (48′) was saved by the Marseille goalkeeper, before Breel Embolo’s, which was also saved (49′).

Magic Breel with a crucial second!

The response was immediate in this 100-mph restart, but Mason Greenwood twice failed to beat a vigilant Philipp Köhn (52′, 53′). However, Monaco remained the more determined in front of goal, and Maghnes Akliouche came within a whisker of beating Rulli with a volley (57′). This regret was short-lived, as, shortly afterward, following a superb pass from Vandi’ in behind the defense, Breel Embolo doubled the lead with a sublime chip (2-0, 58′)!

Köhn is unbeatable and Captain Zak’ is clinical!

It was his sixth Ligue 1 goal of the season, thanks to the Brazilian’s third assist. The match continue to be a non-stop affair, and substitute Amine Gouiri came close to finding Köhn’s top corner, but the ‘keeper pulled off a sublime save (67′). AS Monaco felt victory was within their grasp, and after Lamine Camara’s effort was deflected wide of the top corner (77′), it was Denis Zakaria who ended the suspense with a penalty (3-0, 82’)!

A solid victory and second place to boot!

It was a fifth goal as well for the Monaco captain, who thus definitively sealed Monaco’s triumph against OM, after two final saves from Philipp and an attempt from Folarin Balogun. The Rouge et Blanc therefore won comfortably, to reclaim second place in the Ligue 1 table,  moving ahead of their opponents on the day. DAGHE MUNEGU!!! 🇲🇨
