Mikel Arteta has revealed that Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya is a major doubt ahead of the club’s crunch clash with Manchester City this weekend.
Raya missed the club’s 2-1 win at Girona in the Champions League on Wednesday night with an unspecified injury. His replacement, Neto, made his Arsenal debut and was at fault for Girona’s goal in Spain.
Arsenal take on Manchester City at the Emirates on Sunday, in a clash of huge consequence for their title challenge. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Arteta revealed Raya remains a doubt to feature. He also confirmed Ben White is not ready to return.
“David we’re still uncertain. We have another session tomorrow. We have 48 hours so we will have to see,” he said.
Arsenal’s rivalry with Manchester City has grown in recent seasons with the teams having gone head-to-head for the title in the last two campaigns.
Following September’s draw at the Etihad, tensions boiled over at the full-time whistle. Arteta was involved in an exchange with Erling Haaland but admits needle is ‘normal’ in big fixtures.
“Normal – it is two teams trying to win.”
On how important a win would be for Arsenal this weekend, he added: “It would be a big boost for us. Winning big matches is always something special. Every time we play a big match against our rivals, it brings something extra.”
