The Brazilian striker demonstrated his sharp instincts as a number nine, pouncing on a rebound after Thomas Partey’s shot was parried to notch his sixth goal in four games.

Reflecting on his poacher’s effort, Jesus emphasised the importance of positioning as a striker.

“That’s what it’s all about, me as a nine,” he said. “Obviously, I want to drop, I want to play, sometimes, it’s not just my game to be there. But if I want to score goals I have to be there. I have to wait for the ball for some tap ins or like today, rebounds, so I’m happy with that.

“With my positions to be always there, in the right time and right place to try to score goals. So, I could be in the right place and score so I’m really happy with that.”

Jesus’s contribution extended beyond his goal, as he delivered a combative performance in a physically demanding encounter, earning the player-of-the-match award from TNT Sport.

Speaking after the game, bearing the bruises of the ‘challenges’ he’d received during the game, including an elbow that left him bloodied, Jesus added, “It’s the Premier League!”

“You have to compete. For me, sometimes it’s hard to fight for the ball, long ball but it’s needed. I just try, I always play around tall guys there. But that’s football sometimes, you know, if this happens and we win the game and I score a goal, it can happen every three days!”

The goal also added to an extraordinary record for Jesus: He has never lost a Premier League match in which he has scored, a streak now spanning 60 games. However, the forward was quick to downplay its significance, focusing instead on his team’s ambitions.

“It’s a record you know but me personally I don’t look to this,” he explained. “I just want to keep winning and scoring and helping the team, the club, to be there always fighting for the title.

“I know it’s a long way, we have to look for ourselves and then obviously after, we want the top of the league to drop points but we have to look at ourselves and do our job like we did today.”
