Myles Lewis-Skelly the only bright point in a hugely disappointing loss that leaves Wembley hopes hanging by a thread

Arsenal have left themselves with a mountain to climb in the Carabao Cup semi-finals after they lost their first-leg tie at home to Newcastle.

The Magpies ran out 2-0 winners at the Emirates Stadium, with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon finding the net either side of half-time.

Arsenal had plenty of chances to get back into the tie, though, and Gabriel Martinelli also struck the post before Isak’s opener.

The Gunners, however, were wasteful in front of goal and now must overturn a two-goal deficit when the head to St James’ Park for the second leg next month.

Standard Sport’s Simon Collings was at the Emirates to rate the Arsenal players...

David Raya 6

Not much he could do about either goal, although may well be disappointed he saved Isak’s shot straight to Gordon’s feet when the winger made it 2-0.

Jurrien Timber 6

Back in the team after serving his suspension. Missed a great chance at 0-0 when he somehow headed over the crossbar from just yards out.

William Saliba 5

It is rare you see him this troubled, but Isak caused the Frenchman problems. Missed a good chance from a corner.

Gabriel 6

Like Saliba, had a tough evening trying to deal with Isak, who was excellent. Kept quiet at set-pieces by Dan Burn.

Myles Lewis-Skelly 7

Showed his courage on the ball by taking it in some tight spaces and beating his opposite man. A rare positive on a disappointing night.

Martin Odegaard 5

Has been struggling for form over the past few weeks and had another off-night again. Perhaps missing that connection he has with Bukayo Saka.

Thomas Partey 6

Moved back to the base of midfield after Timber returned from suspension. Didn’t control the game as he often does, but steady enough.

Declan Rice 6

One of Arsenal’s best attacking weapons as he put in a couple of dangerous corners. Did not have much joy against Newcastle’s imposing midfield, though.

Leandro Trossard 5

The latest player to get a go on the right in absence of Saka. Did not pull up any trees and was taken off before the hour mark.

Kai Havertz 5

Back in the team after missing the past two games due to illness. Missed a golden chance in the second half, heading wide from a few yards out.

Gabriel Martinelli 6

Went close to giving Arsenal the lead in the first half when he struck the post. Arsenal’s best attacker on the night, but that’s not much to shout about.

Substitutions

Gabriel Jesus (Trossard 59’) 5

Came on up top as Arsenal searched for a lifeline, but couldn’t make an impact.

Jorginho (Partey 59’) 6

Had a decent effort from the edge of the box saved and volleyed one over late on.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (Lewis-Skelly 78’) N/A

Subs not used: Porter, Kiwior, Calafiori, Tierney, Merino, Sterling.
