As Arsenal chase Champions League glory, transfer speculation is already swirling, with fresh reports from L’Equipe claiming Real Madrid have opened talks with William Saliba’s camp. According to the French outlet, Madrid are the “only club that would appeal” to the Arsenal defender, although Saliba reportedly has “no intention to force any transfer.”

It’s no secret that William Saliba has become one of the Premier League’s standout centre-backs since joining Arsenal, and the timing of Madrid’s interest is hardly surprising. The Spaniards have long admired Saliba’s composure, athleticism and reading of the game, and L’Equipe now suggest his entourage has been in contact with Madrid “for weeks.”
Yet Arsenal hold a firm hand. Saliba only signed a new contract in July 2023, which runs until 2027, leaving the Gunners with control over his immediate future. Moreover, the player himself has previously stated, “I’m really happy” at Arsenal and sees “no rush” regarding a new deal — comments that have reassured fans, at least for now.
Despite Arsenal’s stance, transfer rumours inevitably speculate on potential replacements. One name emerging is Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande, who has caught the attention of Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle. As Mundo Deportivo reports, Sporting could demand up to £68 million for the highly-rated defender. This creates a so-called ‘triangle’ in the market: Madrid’s pursuit of Saliba, Arsenal’s resistance, and Diomande’s availability as an insurance policy.
For Mikel Arteta, this summer is not just about adding fresh talent but also ensuring Arsenal’s core remains intact. With the club battling for the Champions League and pushing for Premier League consistency, losing a defensive linchpin like Saliba would be a massive blow. Arteta and sporting director Edu are reportedly determined to block any approach, no matter how lucrative.
Arsenal’s European ambitions will significantly influence their summer strategy. Success in the Champions League not only boosts the club’s prestige but also strengthens their negotiating power in both keeping key players and attracting top targets. Saliba, whose performances have been integral to Arsenal’s rise, embodies the ambition of this current squad.
The idea of Saliba leaving Arsenal feels like a non-starter — at least for now. The Frenchman has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, and Arsenal have finally found the defensive stability they craved for years. Letting him go, even for Real Madrid, would feel like tearing out the heart of Arteta’s project just as it’s peaking.
Yes, Madrid’s interest is flattering, and for Saliba, the lure of the Bernabéu is undeniable. But Arsenal are no longer a selling club. Their Champions League run and Premier League competitiveness make them a destination, not a stepping stone. Fans will hope the club’s hierarchy stay firm, even if Diomande is lined up as cover. A club with Arsenal’s ambitions should be adding to their ranks, not replacing world-class talent unnecessarily.
If anything, this saga highlights just how far Arsenal have come under Arteta. The days when top players left the Emirates at the first sign of silverware elsewhere should be over. For now, fans should feel confident Saliba’s focus remains on North London — and if the club continue progressing, Madrid may have to look elsewhere.
