Marcell Washington was pictured in training with the Arsenal academy last week, effectively confirming his transfer, and the Gunners finally officially announced the move this weekend.

Arsenal reveal that Washington has now signed professional terms with the club, following his departure from Chelsea. Kepa Arrizabalaga has already made the same move this summer, and Noni Madueke is in the process of finalising his own transfer between the two clubs.

Chelsea had confirmed Washington’s exit in June, releasing him at the end of his scholarship contract on June 30th.

“I feel like just because I’ve signed this contract doesn’t necessarily mean that I’ve made it,” Washington said of the move.

“I think I’ve got a lot to prove and I’m looking forward to doing that. Hopefully, obviously, the coaching staff can see that through my game.

“It’s a very welcoming club. From day one when I came here, I felt really welcomed. That goes from the staff to the players.

“I think it’s a really big club, obviously. The club are always striving to win trophies. I’m just looking to be an addition to that and see what I can offer the club.”

Washington has already been seen wearing 55 in training, so it looks like that will be his Arsenal squad number.

The left-back actually made more appearances for the Arsenal academy than Chelsea’s in 2024/25, playing four times for the Blues and 10 times for the Arsenal u18s and u21s combined whilst on trial in north London.

By the end of the season, the defender was effectively the Arsenal u21s’ starting left-back. He’s continued in that same vein by starting the team’s first pre-season friendly against Boreham Wood on Saturday.
