Arsenal beat Aston Villa in tight affair

Scorers: Trossard 67′, Partey 76′

Arsenal came through a tough test against former manager Unai Emery and Aston Villa to move to six points alongside Manchester City and Brighton.

Arsenal had the better of the early proceedings, with Declan Rice testing Emiliano Martinez after an enterprising run from Gabriel Martinelli before the Argentine was called into action once more to keep a low effort from Bukayo Saka out.

Villa were handed a blow when Matty Cash was forced off with an injury before the midway point of the first half, but they were almost gifted the opening goal when Gabriel was caught on the ball, allowing Morgan Rodgers to put the ball on a plate for Ollie Watkins only for the Villa marksman to roll the ball wide.

Villa continued to be more threatening, with Morgan Rogers embarking on a pair of dazzling runs only to lack any end product, while Leon Bailey’s curled effort was easily caught by David Raya.

There was no clear-cut chance after Watkins’ effort though, and the two sides headed into the break level.

Arsenal almost found themselves behind minutes into the second half though as Villa continued to grow into the ascendency, with David Raya having to pull off an astonishing double save to keep the game level.

And it proved vital as Leandro Trossard came off the bench to put his side into the lead against the run of play just after the hour mark, providing a ruthless streak that the Gunners had lacked to date with his very first touch.

As Villa pushed on, they were punished as Thomas Partey arrowed a low effort into the bottom corner to double their advantage, and leave the Gunners heading for maximum points.

There was still time for Ross Barkley to blaze over when well placed, while Jacob Ramsey tested Raya with a stinging effort, but the result had been put beyond doubt.

Haaland hits hat-trick in City win

Scorers: Haaland (PEN) 12′, 16′, De Bruyne 14′; Szmodics 7′

After going behind to a shock opener, three Manchester City goals in just 193 first half seconds saw them see off Ipswich Town with a 4-1 win at the Etihad Stadium which saw Erling Haaland grab his first hat-trick of the campaign.

Ipswich took a shock lead with seven minutes played at the Etihad when he capitalised on some poor defending from the hosts to squeeze the ball under Ederson for the opening goal and his first for the club.

However, City were given an instant reprieve when Savinho won a penalty, which was awarded following a VAR check, and from the spot, Erling Haaland made no mistake and from there, the floodgates quickly opened.

Within two minutes, the champions were ahead thanks to Kevin De Bruyne and just two more minutes after that, Haaland had his second of the afternoon by rounding the goalkeeper and cushioning the ball home.

The crossbar then denied both Rico Lewis and De Bruyne from making it four to a rampant City, who welcomed İlkay Gündoğan back to the club with a late second half cameo but it was Haaland who stole his thunder with a late fourth which secured the match ball.

It is unlikely to be the last time this season he does so, notching the 23rd hat-trick of his career, 10 of which have came in City sky blue.

Spurs swat Everton aside easily

Scorers: Bissouma 14′, Son 25′, 77′ Romero 70′

Everton’s early season form hints at big trouble ahead after they followed up their 3-0 loss to Brighton with a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham in north London.

Following his recent off-field controversy, Yves Bissouma provided the perfect apology to his Tottenham team-mates with a curling effort which crashed in off the underside of the crossbar for his first goal for the club following some patient build-up play to get things going.

Heung-min Son then made it 2-0 as Jordan Pickford was caught in possession by the high-pressing South Korean and he got the goal he deserved for his efforts.

In the second half, Cristian Romero marked a century of Spurs appearances in style by heading a James Maddison corner kick in off the crossbar before a gut-busting Micky van de Ven run saw him burst forward before laying off for Son to claim his second and continue the visitors’ miserable start to the campaign.

West Ham clinical at Crystal Palace

Scorers: Souček 67′, Bowen 72′

West Ham bounced back swiftly from opening day defeat as they put Crystal Palace to the sword with a 2-0 win at Selhurst Park.

With Adam Wharton pulling the strings brilliantly, Palace should have taken an early lead only for Odsonne Édouard to spurn a big chance when played in by the midfielder before Eberechi Eze hit the crossbar shortly before half-time.

Sure enough, in the second half Palace were made to pay for not making the most of their superiority when Tomáš Souček gave West Ham the lead when the ball broke kindly in his direction after some penalty area pinball and he calmly swept low into the back of the net.

Buoyed by the opener, Julen Lopetegui’s side added a quickfire second when Jarrod Bowen netted his first goal as captain, curling home from Max Kilman’s pass to give the Hammers their first win of the season, while the Eagles remain without a point.

Fulham up and running

Scorers: Smith Rowe 19′, Iwobi 70′; Faes 38′

Fulham put their opening night Old Trafford disappointment with a 2-1 win over Leicester City at Craven Cottage.

Emile Smith Rowe opened his Fulham account on his home debut with a neat early finish after his side pounced quickly in transition to cut the visitors open.

Leicester levelled when a lengthy check on a towering Wout Faes header resulted in the goal being awarded in their favour.

But another ex-Arsenal man put Fulham back in the box seat when he latched onto a simple through ball down the right and scampered through before squeezing in at the near post for the winner to get the Cottagers on the board for the campaign.

Forest victorious at Southampton

Scorers: Gibbs White 70′

Morgan Gibbs-White grabbed the only goal of a tense affair on the south coast as Nottingham Forest defeated Southampton 1-0.

After 70 scoreless minutes on the south coast, the deadlock was eventually broken as the game ticked into the closing stages when Gibbs-White reacted quickest in the area to decide it.

Southampton lost the ball on the edge of their own area and when the ball made its way into the area, Gibbs-White lashed home from close range after his initial header was blocked for the only goal of the game.

They move on to four points from two games, while Saints are still waiting for their first point, and goal.

João Pedro sinks Man Utd at the death

Scorers: Welbeck 32′, João Pedro 90+5′; Diallo 60′

Brighton continued their perfect start to the season as a João Pedro winner deep into added time saw them overcome Manchester United 2-1 in a dramatic affair in the south coast rain.

Manchester United surprisingly named an unchanged side from their win over Fulham and should have been ahead after 10 minutes when Diogo Dalot picked out Amad Diallo with a perfect back post cross and he fluffed his lines completely with a volley from close range.

They were made to pay for their big miss on 32 minutes when some slack defending inside their own six-yard box allowed former United striker Danny Welbeck to pounce for the 100th goal of his club career against his old employers.

United came close to an instant response when Marcus Rashford bundled home from close range but the goal was ruled out for offside to keep it 1-0 at the break.

The Seagulls almost added a second shortly after the restart but Dalot produced a goal-saving clearance to deny Kaoru Mitoma before Diallo made amends for his earlier miss by beating the offside trap and squeezing a deflected effort into the corner to level.

United should have been ahead 10 minutes later when substitute Alejandro Garnacho tapped the ball into an empty net – only for it to be disallowed in incredible fashion due to Joshua Zirkzee, in an offside position, knocking the ball over the line from millimetres out.

That miss proved pivotal when, in the 95th minute, Brighton kept the ball alive well from a corner and a back post cross was nodded home by João Pedro for a stunning winner to keep his side top of the table.
