Marc Guehi is beginning to make headlines, not because of his outstanding performance at the European Championship, but because of his possible departure from Crystal Palace. The English centre-back, who has entered the final year of his contract, has several suitors. Arsenal are keeping an eye on his situation. The Gunners might be looking for a young profile who might help them win the Premier League.

According to Football Insider, Arsenal have already shown interest in the centre-back from Crystal Palace, Marc Guehi. Mikel Arteta is looking to strengthen his defence, although he has a fairly established first-choice pairing. Guehi would fit in well with his style of play, and his ability to anticipate attacks, get forward with the ball the ball and cover space makes him an interesting option. The 24-year-old has already won the FA Cup with Crystal Palace and is a very important part of thei defensive lineup. Newcastle United are also tracking him, but in the Gunners’ case, the move would be more about depth and planning than immediate urgency.
However, it is worth looking at this with a cool head. Arsenal do not need a centre-back as a matter of urgency. Saliba and Gabriel have performed at a very high level and form one of the strongest duos in the country. Unless one gets injured or leaves, it’s hard to imagine Guehi playing regularly. So is it worth spending 20-30 million on a back-up? If Arsenal want to compete on all fronts, they must expand their rotation, and if Jakub Kiwior leaves, then he might be a good option.
The Englishman is reliable, intelligent and young, but he needs minutes. He cannot afford to be benched right at the peak of his career. If the club want to sign him, they would have to make his role clear to him. At that price, it is still a reasonable deal. In a Premier League where prices are easily inflated, finding an England international, with that profile and that age, for less than 30 million is unusual. However, if the player prioritises playing every week, perhaps Newcastle have a more convincing card. Arsenal must decide whether they want to cover themselves well or reinforce other more urgent areas. For now, the ball is in their court.
