Arsenal announce signing of Brentford captain | OneFootball

Christian Norgaard has completed his transfer to Arsenal from Brentford, joining the club in a deal worth an initial £10 million, rising to £12 million with performance-related bonuses.

The 31-year-old Danish international becomes Mikel Arteta’s second midfield addition of the summer following the £55 million signing of Martin Zubimendi, who was officially unveiled at the start of July.

Norgaard, who captained Brentford last season, made 35 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and registering four assists.

He also featured in 11 of Denmark’s last 16 internationals, including both legs of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final against Portugal.

Defensively, he ranked among the top ball winners in the Premier League, with only Ryan Gravenberch registering more interceptions across the campaign.

Norgaard said, “You can get almost emotional because maybe it was a dream that I’ve given a little bit up on coming towards the later stage in my career.

“I’ve just turned 31 and had signed a new deal with Brentford. Of course, there’s always a little chance that a miracle could happen with Brentford, but it was probably unrealistic to play Champions League with them.

“Now, I get to hear the anthem and be a part of a Champions League campaign. It’s a childhood dream and something I didn’t think would be possible. So it’s something I’m really, really happy about.”

Arsenal are also working to finalise deals for Viktor Gyokeres and Cristhian Mosquera, while exploratory talks continue over a possible move for Eberechi Eze.

With Norgaard and Zubimendi now secured, Arteta will begin pre-season with the core of the midfield he had targeted in place.
