Arne Slot watched on as his team won 3-2 at St James’ Park.

Liverpool winning the game in the 10th minute of added time.

Arne Slot saw his team go a goal up against the run of play.

Then with Newcastle United going down to ten men just before half-time, Liverpool came out and made it 2-0 within seconds of the restart.

It looked for sure that Newcastle United were going to end up on the end of a very heavy defeat but incredibly they came back to be drawing 2-2.

Only to then see 11 added minutes go up at the end of the scheduled 90, which proved eventually a step too far.

I think Arne Slot totally lets himself down with these disingenuous comments after the final whistle:

“I’m not too sure if I saw a football match today.

“It was set-piece after set-piece, long throws, it didn’t have a lot to do with tactics.

“I liked how we stood strong, we didn’t collapse at all.

“Them going down to ten men, when a goalkeeper takes every free kick, it’s not so much help when you are one player up.

“That is why it’s so difficult to get a 2-0 over the line.”

All a bit embarrassing really from the Liverpool boss there.

Totally ignoring the fact that when it was 11 v 11, Newcastle United dominated the first half playing great football. There wasn’t a single long throw in that first half, as for tactics, Eddie Howe clearly won that battle easy in the opening 45. Newcastle played through Liverpool (on the ground!) time after time and only the final ball, bad choices, poor finishing, desperate last ditch defending prevented United having the game won by half-time. Liverpool scored totally against the run of play in the 35th minute.

I think this is a classic case of Arne Slot desperately trying to deflect from his and his team’s own shortcomings. Liverpool DID collapse in that second half against ten men and it was Newcastle United pressing for the win with 10 men, only to be sucker punched with that last gasp Liverpool winner.

Eddie Howe once again won the tactical battle hands down in that second half. Arne Slot would have loved Newcastle to roll over, play nicey nicey with a man down, let Liverpool do whatever they want, but they very much didn’t.

The effort was unbelievable from Newcastle despite a man down and Liverpool collapsed and conceded two goals. They didn’t have a single threat to Nick Pope’s goal after they made it 2-0 on 46 minutes, until the winner on 100 minutes.

United did mix it up and hit it long because a goal down it becomes very difficult to play through a quality opposition, though they did still do that at times. As for the long throws, we don’t even have anybody capable of that, Tino’s improvised efforts were kind of getting five yards short of the near post.

I think generally Arne Slot has came over well since arriving at Liverpool and maybe we can just put this immediate embarrassing reaction down to the scare Newcastle United gave him, Slot knowing how lucky he and his team had been.

Indeed, with some of his other reaction after the match, Arne Slot was more honest, here speaking to BBC Sport:

“Relief.

“If you are 2-0 up against 10 men, then they brought it back to 2-2 and maybe it was even deserved.

“Then they had more chances than we had.

“Their fans were so loud – wow!

“It was an amazing atmosphere.

To end with a goal during the best attack we had…

“The feeling is relief.

“We found a way to win.”

Arne Slot then asked about potentially signing more players before the transfer window closes:

“We should talk about the game and Hugo Ekitike scoring for the third game in a row.

“This is not the moment or the place to say anything else.”
