Liverpool boss Arne Slot has quickly turned one Red into something ‘unbelievable’, says Neil Mellor. The Dutchman is working some wonders.
Arne Slot inherited a fantastic squad of players - no one can question that. While certain players are still looking to fulfil their potential, the tools were there for the new head coach to develop true stars.
And he's done just that. Ryan Gravenberch is one who has made remarkable improvements, changing his role almost entirely with wonderful results.
But another is Luis Diaz. Diaz started brilliantly at Liverpool back in 2022 but tailed off, developing a reputation for inconsistency and a lack of end product.
Seven games into this season, however, and both of those claims look ridiculous. Diaz is not just scoring goals to show off an end product, but he's doing it with remarkable consistency.
A goal and assist against Brentford, two against Manchester United, another two against Bournemouth - five starts in all competitions, five goals and an assist.
“Unbelievable," said Neil Mellor of Diaz, per Liverpoolfc.com. "If you’re wondering when did Luis Diaz get to five goals last season in the Premier League? February.
"So it just shows the improvement he’s made this season. Absolutely outstanding, it really is.”
Slot has immediately got Diaz delivering in ways he just couldn't quite manage under Jurgen Klopp. It's fantastic to see - but we should remember that the season is very young.
Diaz needs to keep this up for a few more months yet before he entirely ends the accusations of inconsistency. There's no doubt that this is the best possible start, however, and he's well on his way to becoming one of Liverpool's most important players.
Of course, his biggest worry might be that Cody Gakpo, his rival for the left-wing role, is also having a breakout season...
