With the January transfer window now open one of the biggest questions was who could Manchester City target to strengthen their midfield. One of the reported targets for the world champions was Torino midfielder Samuele Ricci. Rob Draper and Jamie Jackson had previously reported for the Guardian that the Italian international could be a target for Pep Guardiola’s side. But now he is off the board as he has signed a contract extension with Torino. That now leaves you wondering: Who will City land in January to strengthen their midfield?

Torino has confirmed today that Samuele Ricci has signed a contract extension with the club. The news was confirmed via their official website. Ricci’s contract extension will keep him at Torino until 2028. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that news via his official X account.

With Ricci having committed his future to Torino that is another Manchester City midfield target that is off the board. Bruno Guimaraes and Martin Zubimendi also aren’t Manchester City targets in January. Jack Gaughan confirmed that news in his recent report for the Daily Mail. That now leaves you wondering just who could City land this month.

What Pep Guardiola’s side needs in midfield is a specific type of player. Zubimendi, Guimaraes or Ricci could’ve potentially filled the void left by Rodri’s injury. But it won’t be any one of the trio listed who City will land this month. Now attention will shift to who they could bring in. As it stands, there aren’t any concrete links to one particular player. For now, three players are now out of contention to sign for the world champions this month.

But it isn’t a reason to panic just yet. The transfer window has just opened and Manchester City will have their eyes on someone. Who that is remains to be seen.
